So a week ago I look at a compact at $77 per week, today it's 269? This is for pick up on sat. I have never seen an issue like this in the off season, I go the same time every year. Not sure I am going to rent a car for the entire 2 weeks at nearly $800, wth?

Maybe I am remembering incorrectly, but I just checked my Maui rental for the week of 7/4, T it was 215 for the week??

I did find $595 for 15 day via advantage, but sept higher than the middle of summer???

In future, I suggest reserving a car whenever you have a good price since most will permit cancelation without penalty up to the day before (or even day of) the rental.

As for crazy prices...it happens often. Welcome to the game.

It works on availability. If they're running low on cars, they'll jack up the price. Perhaps they've just hit that number since you saw a better rate last week and now they're looking for a premium on remaining cars.

With the greatest of respect, car rentals are something you can pretty well reserve with no upfront money or deposit. If you saw it last week for $77, um, well, never mind. But booking right away is pretty much the norm for most TUGgers as it can be cancelled with no penalty and rebooked if a lower rate is found, and if the rate goes up, you're locked in.

So I know that's not much comfort but could be an explanation. Perhaps it will come down, keep checking a few times a day.

Are you looking for a rental starting next week? Looking this close to the date you need the car will pretty much always result in higher prices.

As a point of reference I booked a full-size on Costco quite a while ago I rechecked the price on that last week for pick up this coming Friday and it was $140

As others posted above, check Costco.

I booked a SUV through Costco (Enterprise) back in August and a week before I left for Maui the price dropped, so I re-booked the same car again and cancelled the previous reservation.

I just checked Costco, $522 is the cheapest for 15 days better
