WKORV owners I’ve got some poop for you

(I’m not a Starwood owner but I’ve been in Maui for 2 weeks now and have some info that might be of interest to you. If this is old news, I apologize. Stick with me and don’t poop out on me)

Have you ever been to WKORV and flushed the toilet and wondered where all that stuff went? Well I did and you should too.

Every “contribution” to the Maui County Waste Management System flows northeast, under State Hwy 30, Honoaplilani Road, and 1 mile down the road to the waste management facility there. There Mother Nature takes over and converts last night’s Mama’s Fish House, Roys, and Ruth’s Chris dinners into products that can be released back into Maui.

One byproduct of this process is a foul odor that rockets southwest from the facility and it isn’t pretty. I know since I’ve walked the land there at least 50 times.

Why is all this important to you WKORV owners? Well there is great news in the air for you. Two years ago IntraWest sold 20 acres to Starwood which is adjacent and north of WKORV-N. This will be the location of new timeshares, and the last WKORV timeshares, at some point. The only thing stopping new construction is that foul odor; IntraWest forgot to mention that to Starwood. (Sneaky Canadians)

Well Starwood and IntraWest are now negotiating with the County of Maui to upgrade the waste management facility by placing tops on the open aeration tanks – like they have in cold parts of the country. That will eliminate the stench and Starwood can start WKORV-N-N I guess.

Anyway, if this is news to you I’m happy and if this is yesterday’s leftovers you can flush this down the toilet.

This isn't news. I think we've talked about this a few times here on TUG, and I'm pretty sure that Andrew Doughty also talks about it in "Maui Revealed."

We noticed the odor on a humid/rainy night from about halfway through the North property (when we were walking along the beach). Otherwise, though, I can't say we noticed it -- and we were looking... er, smelling.

Perry, why do you seem to take so much delight in bashing WKORV? First it was the allegedly low rate of owner retention, now it's the reclamation facility. What's next? Just curious.

Perry is a equal opportunity basher. See some of his posts on the Marriott board. He's not just picking on you.

Hi Perry - We're all aware of that, but the smell isn't the worst of it... During a heavy storm earlier this winter that sewer plant flooded and the run-off ran clear across the highway, across the Westin property, and into the ocean. The local authorities closed the beach for several days. The area that was flooded by the sewer plant is where Starwood is supposedly building their NEXT resort. That's quite a selling point, don't you think?

Not to brag about the fine members of this board or anything, ;) but they are pretty darn well informed about Starwood poop, I mean events.

It's all in good humored fun. :)

Last week he stirred the Marriott Maui owners by simply stating that he preferrd the full-sized,
non-air-conditioned units of Sands of Kahana over the Marriott.

Well, as I said if this was old news just flush it.

I didn't know that it was common knowledge that Starwood would pay millions to fix the problem - but it was to me.

I'm not bashing WKORV, just items that struck me as odd - only 33% of WKORV owners returning and raw sewage running across their property never occurred to me as being related.

Here is the salemen's spin on this event:

1) Human waste is a natural fertilizer - a technique practiced by the ancient Hawaiians that will result in the most beautiful landscaping on Maui!

2) This is mother nature's way of keeping non-Starwood intruders off the property.!

3) Human waste contains important nutrients that are washed into the ocean and give the ocean life vitamins and minerals that they are normally deprived of - the snorkeling will be even better now!

4) Due to this serendipitous event, the WKORV now has the only black sand beach on West Maui!

See - no worries! It's all good!

That 33% statistic is ridiculous. I spoke with one of the management staff at WKORV on our last visit when we had a problem with our room assignment and as part of the conversation she mentioned to me the number is typically in the 65-75% range. She had nothing to gain by fudging the number and has a hell of a lot more credibility than an SVO salesperson.

I'm not sure why you would take a SVO salesperson's word as gospel since we know most of them are either ill-informed our outright "bending" the truth.

I spoke with the sales manager - I couldn't believe the 33% and challenged him on it. He insisted he knew what he was talking about so I accepted his answer.

If just 33% of WKORV owners want to come back then that explains how easily it is for an owner to get any week that they are entitled to and not have to bring out the atomic clock and call to the very second when reservations opens.

Marriott Maui Ocean Club owners are the exact opposite - 80% of them return year after year and getting Christmas, 4th of July week, or President's week is very very hard to do.

You can't have both - 80% of the owners fighting to get back and those same owners taking their sweet time placing a reservation.

This is great logic and I applaud Starwood salesreps.

But, honestly, I am NOT bashing WKORV - they are better than the new Marriott towers down the road and are top notch.

So don't take my weird sense of humor as an attack on your fine resort - it's not.

The new parcel of land is a completely different thing - unless that sewage smell is taken care of they can't develop that land they bought from InterWest.

Just returned yesterday from a week at WKORV...although I was aware of the potential odors, I had completely forgotten about it and didn't even notice (smell) it.

We just returned from Ka'anapali Beach and the wind was NOT blowing SW from the plant in the last 2 weeks - it mostly rocketed south and even east away from the ocean.
