Any current information on Wind in the Pines (#1903) in Great Barrington MA? There are only a couple of TUG reviews and they're pretty old. The members seemed to like it though and it sounds like an interesting area.

Thanks,

Sheila

we've never stayed there, just driven by. I believe it is a converted motel. Sits back from the road in Great Barrington, Ma. The area is steeped in cultural events primarily in the summer, though this resort is a little farther from the events such as Tanglewood, Berkshire Theatre Festival and many others. I do believe it is well maintained and I believe the owners seem happy. That's about all I can tell you. Hope it helps a bit.

Thanks, Pat. I ask a friend who lives on the Cape and he wasn't familar with the area at all, but it looks interesting. I think it might make a good stopping point on our long drive to the Cape next month.

I now have another option. Silverleaf's Oak 'n Spruce Resort. Of the two, it looks like it has a better kitchen and maybe better bed configuration. I put it on hold and may let the Wind in the Pines expire.

Any comments?

Sheila

Oak 'n Spruce is far better than Wind in the Pines in every way. Take it!

Thanks. That's how it looked to me.

I agree. Try to get a 2 bedroom for 6/6. That is the larger units and more upscale.

Thanks for the tip, Pat. We weren't going to stay all week anyway, so by moving our check-in date forward one day I was able to get a 6/6 instead of the 4/6 I had on hold. Looking forward to checking out a new area.

Hi Sheila,

I grew up in Great Barrington and my mom still lives there, so if I can help you out with any local info, please let me know.

Will you be there in the summer or sooner. I can recommend some of the cultural things we enjoy there.

If anyone wants cultural things, come to NYC anytime. And you don't have to deal with the mosquitos.

Thanks for the offers of help. Any suggestions welcome. I've done a bit of searching on the web. We will be there 5/30 (or a day or so later) until 6/5. Many of the cultural things appear to start later in the season than that.

The Norman Rockwell Museum looks interesting. We enjoy just taking scenic drives, so please share any great ones. We like antiques but don't have a lot of room or money to spend on them. Enjoy thrift stores, farmers markets, local crafts (found great painted floats in Canada).

Generally we'll just putter around.

Thanks again for the help.

We just returned from a week at Fox Hollow. I recommend taking a drive south down route 7 to Kent Conn. We found a park with a great waterfall thats a must see. Also take route 7 north and return on the 7A by passes when possible. Route 20 east is nice also to Westfield. 20 west to Albany wasn't so nice but since we wanted to stop in Pittsfield on the way home we took a differant way and missed an exit and ended up by Troy and took route 66 to rt43. This ended up being a good ride through a lakes area. We took rt2 to North Adams and then went north on 100. 100 is a nice peaceful drive through the mountains. We ended up in Whitingham VT the birthplace of Brigham Young and found a monument to him in a park. We then took route 100 to 9 and back to 7 to return home.

If you get to Kent, CT, don't miss the European chocolate maker in the middle of town.

If you get to Pittsfield and have an interest in architecture, the Colonial Theater has been restored to its glory as one of the country's finest examples of early theaters.

This part of the country is a delight--culture, history, fine dining, beautiful sights.

That would be Kent Falls in Kent, CT, and the chocolate shop is Belgique. About one hour south of GB on route 7.

Other touristy things in the GB area:

Chesterwood--home of William Chester French who sculpted the Lincoln Memorial

Tanglewood--Summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra

Jacob's Pillow--Dance venue

The Mount--Home of Edith Wharton, and they (or at least they used to) stage Shakespeare plays in the summer--google Shakespeare and Company

Berkshire Theater Festival--summer stock theater

Mass MoCA--Museum of Contemporary Art

Clark Art Institute--been a long time since my 5th grade field trip ;) but I think I remember impressionist works there.

Mom's favorite restaurants:

Pearl's on Railroad Street--a little bit of NYC in the "sticks"

The Brewery on Rte. 7 north of "town" more casual--burgers, etc. (I can personally vouch for the chocolate cake)

Suisse Hutte --this might actually be in NY State--it's on the property of Catamount Ski area which is right on the border. A little pricey but great for a special occassion

Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge--Famous country inn--Norman Rockwell lived across the street.
