My daughter got a new Gateway laptop and the WIFI won't work in my home wireless DSL setup. It works fine when hard wired. Called Gateway and they said my wireless probably isn't set up for Vista and that's probably the problem and I should call Dell Wireless for some newer software to make it work -- haven't done it yet but I can't imagine that is the problem. I have no problem with any of my computers in my house but none of them have Vista.

Does this sound right?

UPgrade to XP or WIndows 2000 - problem solved

Vista works with NOTHING that doesn't say "ready for Vista". I'm not surprised that wireless, which is finicky at best, would also fail to work. You should have refused to accept Vista on her PC unless you enjoy being a beta tester for Microsoft and the PC world.

Not really, but there isn't enough information to know. What does Dell have to do with the Gateway machine? Have you configured the gateway machine properly to use your network? If you're using a passphrase, try using hex keys instead. Not all vendors implement the passphrases the same way.

Using windows to configure the wireless connection should work. My computer that is wired to the router is XP, but I had no problem setting up a new Vista PC (desktop) to use the wireless. My laptops are all XP so don't know if that would make a difference or not.

Vista

I've had no problems connecting to wireless with Vista at all and I went from a Dell to a Sony laptop.

But...umm...what is a hex key?

We got a laptop for my son last month from Dell with Vista and no problems connecting to the wireless setup with xp's. Its easy to mistype the passphrase, I have it saved it in a text file and copy/paste.

Vista has some serious issues with wireless security. I purchased a new laptop with Vista and a router. COuldn't get it to connect to the wireless router with any sort of security enabled. It worked fine as an open network. Went to Belkin's website and determined that the new router I had didn't work with Vista. I was able to look up what routers would work with Vista and am now finally able to connect to my secure network. There are many cases documented on the technical message boards about the wireless security issues with Vista. Do some research and find a Vista compatible router. It may still take some work, but it should do the trick. Then the next problem is getting that printer to work that is connected to the wired PC from the laptop, finally figured that out too.
