Why There Is No Daylight Savings in Hawaii

While most of you started Daylight Savings (DST) this weekend, in fact Hawaii did not join you. Hawaii has never observed daylight saving time under the Uniform Time Act, having opted out of the Act’s provisions over fifty years ago. Now it looks like the rest of the world may soon join Hawaii in eliminating this practice.

Until next fall, take note that Hawaii will be 3 hours earlier than the west coast, instead of 2 hours.

Question: Why has Hawaii never adopted Daylight Savings Time?

Far enough south that sunrise and sunset do not have big swings like northern latitudes do. Besides States can do what they want. AZ does not switch either.

Yup as a teenager in Honolulu, I remember it being twilight at 7:30 at the height of summer, and around 6-6:30 other times of year. Not really a big change between summer and winter.

Most of AZ doesn't switch, but the Navajo nation observes DST. We almost learned the hard way when we were debating whether to drive past Cameron for an attraction after visiting Grand Canyon. Fortunately because of smart phones, we avoided a long drive for nothing :)

Bingo! Most of those who think we should just eliminate DST probably haven't lived in the more northern areas.
