The real assassin in Apple's iOS line is the iPod touch. Once again, this became clear as the device racked up another notch on its belt with the official death of Microsoft's standalone Zune, which was quietly killed this week.

Pah. Neither one supports FLAC. And I'd rather shave my head with a cheese grater than try to put music onto an iPod without using iTunes.

My iRiver, however, is still going strong. Hacked with Rockbox, HDD yanked and replaced with a flash card, and a more robust battery. I get 48 hours of listening time between charges. I can play all my vinyl rips. And I can even play a game of Pac Man or a generic "bejeweled" while I listen.

Oh, and I've got a built-in radio, digital audio in -- for recording off the sound board at concerts -- and it acts like a portable hard drive.

No down side, other than the "creamed spinach" graphics.

The best designed product is not usually the most successful.

I just hope I never lose my iRiver. Have you seen what the used players are going for? I've seen the H140 going for as much as $500 on eBay.

Although, these days, doesn't matter what model people buy. I'd even get an H10 -- just yank the HDD and replace with a 60GB flash card.
