I thought it was to keep legalized theft. Why should metro cards and their balance expire? Allow them to work forever.

Also I would prefer public transportation be free. What is the cost to collect payments? Or is it because they could not cover demand?

I do salute lirr with peak and off peak rates.
 
We have a Metrocard we keep as a souvenir. It expired in 2018.
One day, they'll switch to chips imbedded under the skin that read us walking by.
