Willie Nelson (WN), thanks for sharing that piece of information.
The truth is no one knows the real answer.

Why is Allegiant Airlines G4? Spirit Airlines NK? Aer Lingus EI?
Some say Spirit's NK designation comes from the country where they learned how to treat their customers: North Korea.

Aer Lingus is probably EI because of the country where it started Eire.

Another false headline. An accurate headline, based on the story is: No one really knows why Southwest's Airline Code is WN
But it makes a nice story.

I read somewhere that Southwest tried to get the rights to SW - 2x - but the price was too high.

One of my favorite aviation term is “Speedbird”. That’s the call sign used for British Airways in the Air Traffic Control system. It come from their logo, a bird symbol called the speedbird. “Speedbird 123, contact ground on 122.9”

Cheers

One of my favorite SNL sketches featured James McAvoy as a Scottish air traffic controller...
