Why does www.rci.com always ask for country and language?

Madge,

I don't have a bookmark to the login page of RCI's website, nor do I want to try to remember the URL (http://www.rci.com/RCI/CDA/Home/GEP/gepForward.jsp?A=US&B=en&button1=Submit) or type it in. I just like to type in www.rci.com and have it take me to where I want to go -- to the page that comes up after I select my country and language. However, it never does it. Just about every day I use one of two different computers to go to www.rci.com and every time it asks for my country and language, as if this is something that changes on a regular basis. I can assure you that it is extremely unlikely that my country or prefered language will ever change, so I am wondering if it is possible for your website to do what many other international websites do: remember my preferences through the use of a tracking cookie.

Thanks.

;) hello,

The RCI.com website does have a cookie, but it is set to expire at the end of the session.(JSESSIONID).
Perhaps this is intended for security, but it does seem a bit useless to have a cookie operating like this?

I have looked at the life of other cookies on my computer. Some last for a few days, but there are a few left to run until 2038!

gravedee,

Even though RCI's mainframe database is used globally by RCI staff, the web applications for international RCI offices are separate. Several years ago, we put a function in place that would recognize the RCI ID number being entered and direct the member to the appropriate website from there. It caused numerous problems and we had to go to a system where members would direct themselves to the appropriate websites by entering the country of residence and language.

I'll pass along the suggestion about extending the cookie's expiration time.
