Where to stay near Washington DC

Haven't really found anyplace to go this summer with our timeshare, most places booked or air travel real expensive. However, did find real cheap airfare from LAX to DCA so looking for a place near DC. We have stayed at FF Alexandria, traded through a private party, and it worked out great. But don't see anyone to trade with and nothing posted on rentals.

So question is - any recommendations on where to stay for 2 parents travelling with a 14 year old son? We loved staying at FF Alexandria being so close to the Metro but don't know of any other area to even look for hotel/motels. We don't need to rent a car since from the last visit there the public transit system can take us wherever we want to go so would want something near a Metro station. Any inexpensive lodging recommendations for those of us spoiled by timeshare condos?
Thanks,
CathyW

Marriott Wardman Park

We stayed a weekend at Marriott Wardman Park...a huge hotel a few steps away from the Woodley Park-Zoo metro station. Also within walking distance of the National Zoo. Of course it would help if you had some Marriott points to use.

Comfort Inn Falls Church

There's a Comfort Inn in Falls Church, VA: http://www.comfortinnfallschurch.com/
(703)534-9100

They have a free shuttle to the Metro Station, and serve a great complimentary breakfast, including waffles made to order. :D Rack rates start at $90, but I've seen as low as $70.

Good luck!

Check out ebay for FF Alexandria rentals...I rented there twice before
we broke down and bought there..you can usually find a rental for less than
$ 100 a night.
I also enjoyed staying at the Kalorama Guest house at Woodley Park. (It's
more of a B & B..walking distance to the Metro & very reasonable.) Kalorama
also has guest houses at Mintwood Place.

There is a nice (and almost new!) Courtyard by Marriott at the Dunn Loring metro stop (Orange line) in Vienna, Virginia. Nice neighborhood, our son and DIL live in near-by townhouse. Many DC tour buses stop there. We just got a weekend rate (in mid-May) for $99 a night, King room with pull-out sofa and breakfast.
