We are wanting to plan a trip to Hawaii in July or August and the only places available through our VI timeshare are either Pono Kai in Kauai or Sea Mountain on the Big Island. I read a review that said Pono Kai smells musty; is that going to be normal given the climate? We are looking for family-friendly and would really like to be on the beach. Suggestions for must see's are also welcome.

Even in RCI there's not much showing up. Trying to find something for the summer this close to summer is hard. This year I think people who already have July or August weeks reserved are holding on to them to see what happens in Hawaii. Many people are thinking they are going to cancel their summer plans to go there this year as they're not sure how much the state will be opened up.

The Pono Kai is on a beach but it’s really no safe for swimming but you can wade there. The Pono Kai has went through a large renovation project and most of the resort has been completed. There are still some units that are not done yet though. The older units may smell mist when you first get there but that will clear up once you open the unit or turn the air on. The renovated units aren’t an issue.

I believe July would be the earliest for out of state travel here and that is iffy. Make sure you can cancel if you book anything.

If those are your only choices, take Pono Kai. A lot of units have been remodeled, so not sure what the musty comment is about. It's centrally located on Kauai, near good shopping and good beaches. You'd like it.

Sea Mountain is at the south end of the Big Island, and is a converted condo complex. It is very isolated, next to the Black Sand Beach at Punalu'u, and a long ways from anywhere. I've stayed there, and it was nice and restful, but there was nothing for kids to do.

We have never stayed at Pono Kai. We have stayed just down the street at Kihe'i Shores. Pono Kai is in a nice central location on Kaua'i. We have also stayed at Sea Mountain. Things to do are South Point (jump off cliff into ocean), Green Sand Beach, Black Sand Beach, drive to Volcano National Park, etc.
