We don't know Las Vegas neighborhoods or residential areas so hopefully some of you have ideas for a short-term (a month or two) furnished rental (studio or 1-bedroom) for a 22-year-old relocating there. He's not a student -- relocating for a job -- and wanting a short-term arrangement so he can get a bit settled into the new job and take some time to find the right long-term housing.

Any recommendations of particular neighborhoods or zip codes to consider -- maybe even specific apartment buildings or developments? Not looking near the Strip particularly . . . something more residential (could be up to a 20 min. drive outside downtown) would be great, in an apartment or condo complex. Thanks for any ideas.

First of all... where will he be working?

Second issue... what's he looking to pay each month?

Third issue... does he need completely furnished?

The biggest problem with most of the suite type monthly rentals are simply that the majority of people who live in them have issues. The upside is that you can pay monthly and receive a discounted rate.

If he is not adverse to sharing a home, I would check the Review-Journal Classifieds (available ) ... I did this years ago and was happy with my situation for a few months and it is generally a lot less expensive (vs. a monthly rental) and in my humble opinion can be a much safer situation as well.

Good luck!

Kim

Thanks for the suggestion -- we'll check out those classifieds. He'll be working on the Strip, but doesn't want to live right there. Without any idea of the going rates for furnished rentals, it's hard to give a price range. We've done a lot of online searches, but most all the places look o.k. in their web photos and write-ups . . . knowing which are in o.k. neighborhoods and which aren't is the challenge.

Are you saying the suite-type motels are where the people with "issues" are, so stay away from those?

He's really looking for something basic, secure, and with secure parking.

I hadn't written because I have nothing positive to say. I would warn you against Budget Suites weekly motels, however. Everyone I know who has stayed in one can't wait to get out, and calls them "budget slums."

Furnished apartments are hard to come by here. Most apartments are unfurnished, although they do come with both kitchen appliances *and* washers and dryers. Perhaps he would want to try a roommate share situation for a few months...

I would suggest seeing what kind of monthly rent you could get from the Hilton Grand on Karen. The studio's are fully furnished and large. Very convenient if working oin the strip. The 20 minutes from the strip could be 60 minutes at rush hour. The strip has thousand of employees arriving for their shifts, and trafiic is brutal

Thanks for the help!
We decided the only sensible approach was to go and look . . . and Fern, you are SO right about the "budget suites" with weekly rates! Most of them were not only unacceptable but scary . . . we found only 1 that we could really consider, and that weekly rate was rather pricey.

I had done a lot of online searching to prepare, got feedback from a few people on recommended neighborhoods, printed out info on about 25 possibilities (both month-to-month apartment rentals AND weekly suite type places) . . . and spent yesterday driving by about 25 places and actually went in to something like 17 possible places. Virtually all the apartments were unfurnished, and nearly all had a minimum 6 month lease term. The good news: we saw some very nice places, and settled on one for a shorter term (costs more per month BUT offers the short-term commitment so more flexibility to make a change after a few months, after getting to know the area, commute times to work, etc.).

It was challenging but fun to see and learn about the many different communities of Las Vegas. We've visited lots of times as tourists over the years, so it was interesting to visit more from a prospective resident point of view and see the various neighborhoods and what they all have to offer. We really saw lots of nice properties and, of course, LOTS of development underway!
