When is the best time to see the city? Marathon dates? Fall baseball? Looking for ideas please. Greg

May and mid-September are my favorite times. You'll likely have good weather without the summer heat and humidity that can take a toll on extensive walking. Also, the tourist attractions are a bit less crowded than at some other peak times.

By all means, go during baseball season if you want to see a game. But, if you can, plan for tickets before you make reservations. Many Yankee games get sold out.

Avoid the marathon (November 2 this year), unless you are a fanatic about running. Many streets above 56th are closed on marathon Sunday and traffic is a mess, especially if you need to get to an airport on Sunday afternoon. It's a wonderful weekend for those of us who run it, but it's a curse for others.

Another great weekend is Easter weekend. You and everyone else participate in the people's Easter Parade on 5th Avenue. It's fun to gawk at the beautiful hats and clothing that many participants wear. Police are everywhere and it's safe to be in the crowd.

Early December is nice, too. You can see the Christmas tree and the skaters at Rockefeller Center. And April is usually nice weather and a pleasant springtime quality. I love New York in June, how about you? I love a Gershwin tune, how about you? :D Just kidding.

I would say the only times to really avoid are the marathon, unless you're a big runner; Christmas week (too crowded); and July and August if you're sensitive to heat and humidity. But summer is fun if you can handle the weather--people are out and about.

What are the peak times?

Thanks Dave,
If were going to go to a big city, I think we would like to see it in all it's glory, crowds and all.

If you love to see NYC in full glory....
July 4th..wonderful Fireworks, block parties all over the town..restaurants open to outdoor dinning, boat rides around Manhattan or Sunset cruise on the Hudson River, museums are air conditioned to escape the hot days of summer in the city..

From Thanksgiving week on to New Years Day...the streets are crowded, the weather turns colder and the holiday season begins....plus, just about EVERYTHING cost more...hotels, tickets, shows...

I love the city most right now...weather is great to walk around..brisk and refreshing...easy to get into restaurants, and show tickets are reduced..

Most friends from out of state, request the holiday season...decorations, Christmas tree, window shopping, holiday shows, its the most wonderful time of the year.

Any time, of course!

December through mid-March is usually very chilly. We were there one January when the temperature hovered around 6 in the evenings with highs up to 20 during the day. Compared to California for us that was cold. Tom & Karen from Wisconsin thought those temperatures were warm.

The week before this January week the temperature was 55 during the day. Go figure.

We were in NYC for the 2007 marathon. Around Central Park it was busy but a few blocks away it was typical NYC on a Sunday. I'd go this weekend again and skip the park altogether. (We were at the park last year because we brought several marathoners with us. Good for them.)

Go for a parade or a street fair or a concert or 7-10 shows or ... But GO!

We were there Halloween week and went to the Greenwich Village parade, the largest night parade in the country. The weather was great, it was a week before the marathon.

Last year we went in December. Beautiful but VERY crowded. They had to close the street in front of Rockefeller Center because there were so many people we could not all fit on the sidewalks. We prefer early November, a little nip in the air and a lot less people. It really depends on what you want to do/see.
