Was in the Bahamas recently
Ground beef was priced $12 to $14 a pound
The niece cooking that night chose to go with Ground Turkey instead
Nobody noticed the difference
This was at the SuperValu on Mackey St
You would be stunned at the price at Solomon’s Market
Chicken section was fully stocked at prices just slightly higher than US

Shouldn't this be in the Caribbean Timesharing forum? Not sure why it is up in the Lounge as it doesn't seem general discussion kinda stuff given it was in the Bahamas. I was shocked to see that 88/12 ground beef was $5.99/lb the other day when I went to Costco.

I don’t think it’s just in the Caribbean - ground beef and beef in general is almost a luxury purchase for us now, and we live in Texas! A pound of Kroger ground beef 80/20 is $7.50 this week, $6.50 if you have their digital coupon for $1 off.

We don’t buy many groceries these days. Two quarts of half and half at a time (Cliff sits with his phone solitaire for two hours while his shredded wheat dries out over and over; I can’t lift a less expensive half gallon and aim it with accuracy), cereal, eggs, breakfast meat, and orange juice. I try to buy sausage and bacon when they show up in the grocery store adds, Canadian bacon always seems to be $4.99. Do my best to buy OJ on sale, we aren’t brand loyal, but on our last trip to the store $4.99 was the price on all of them. A half gallon of orange juice should not cost $5!

Heck, at my local Publix here in FL (which is knows for higher prices in general), a few months ago the only ground beef they had out in the cooler was $11/lb. It was just regular stuff, not organic. Crazy!

I was just going to post the same. At least I am only shopping for one. A package with four hamburger patties is 13.99 on sale

Beef in general has gone way up in price due to drought causing ranchers to sell off their herds. Pork has stayed pretty consistent. I'm seeing increased popularity/availability of 50/50 ground beef/pork for around $6 a pound at my nearby Kroger. Beef steaks are north of $14/lb. It will be much worse come late Summer.

Had no idea the drought covered so much of the CONUS

Thanks for the heads up

It definetely is more expensive than previous, but I find that Food Eporium in Marlboro, NJ often has weekend sales of 80/20 ground beef for $3.99/lb.

They also have bone-in prime NY strips for $9.99/lb and prime filet Mignon for $15.99/lb on sale all the time.

Personally, we use ground turkey all the time (even when more expensive than beef) because it is more lean and no-one can tell the difference.

80/20 is on sale at Safeway for about $6.99 a pound here in Silicon Valley, but other types like 90/10 are closer to $11.00 or $12.00 per pound

I have lost a lot of my landscaping in sw Florida due to drought, subsequent cut back in irrigation, I am going to have to redo much of my yard

The PNW didn't get a real winter so the snow pack is small but the lakes are in decent shape. If it's a hot summer I'm thinking we will be in water restriction mode.

A person's taste buds must be really off if you can't tell the difference between ground turkey and ground beef.

It happens. My wife still has a problem with taste and smell since Covid. It works out to her benefit sometimes.

Used for ground taco meat
lots of taco spice mix
It only to fool the young ones
They think they can taste the difference
If no one tells them it is ground turkey
They don't figure it out

A variation on the lady that was selling imported coffee and passing it off as Kona coffee
Scoop Kona would know
Me
Probably not

Yep, like I said, your taste buds must be really off. Lol

Had a craving for a pot roast last week. Still dealing with the sticker shock I got when I saw that a 3 pound arm roast would set me back $35. Went ahead and bought it. There was little beef except ground beef in the meat section at my store, probably because the demand has disappeared at that price.

Me too. It was a rainy, blustery day here, so I bit the bullet and got a small chuck roast & some veggies for the slow cooker. We'll enjoy it for a couple of days.
Ground beef just doesn't work for some things.

Part of this is what we get because of people wanting $15/$20 an hour minimum wage without increasing production. Probably raising minimum age has decreased production.

I haven't seen anyone mention how meat is cut and trimmed. I've noticed that the steaks at our local market have far more fat than just a few years ago. I end up paying for all that excess fat weight.

Bone-in rib steak was on sale for $9.99 last week. But don't be jealous because this includes a huge amount of fat. Some fat makes my steak tastier, but the amount they are selling will raise your blood lipid levels to the sky.

Yes, fat marbling in meat makes it much more flavorful, but as you note this is different than a slab of fat hanging off the side that you need to remove and trash.

I saw 1/4 rib eyes at Costco. That needs another inch to qualify as a steak, imo. Maybe it's carne asada, idk, but it's not very steak like.

One of the best values in beef that I'm aware of are tri-tip roasts. They have a good, beefy flavor and are often on sale here for $5.99 or $6.99/lb. Easy to cook perfectly on the grill if one has a meat thermometer.

Chili, tacos - might not notice the difference with the spices added - but certain meals - can definitely taste the difference. But if one can get used to and make it often, it's much healthier.

Lots of potential reasons, most politically sensitive so I won’t comment. But, the only thing I know that has really gone down in the last year is gas. Only regular unfortunately. Premium has went up from a year ago. I’m sure one of those reasons is more manufacturers are putting turbo 4cyl in their vehicles that require 91 OCT minimum. I’m sure if someone started a post about what has come down over the last year there would be far fewer posts on it.
