When a Facebook argument doesnt go your way - give the company a 1 star review!

This is a wild situation for sure but is a pretty fair example of online interaction in this day and age.

This gentleman recently began posting all over the TUG facebook page about his ability to exit his timeshare himself and being very persistent about it...he actually provided some great information. Sadly however his conversations started becoming argumentative towards other members within the past day and he chose instead to give TUG a 1 star review on trustpilot.

Its a shame that this sort of effort couldnt be focused on the unlimited number of entities in this industry that are designed to scam owners day in and day out, but here we are!

What a load of Bunk on all fronts. Not sure what entity is behind TrustPilot? But how can some independent entity organization permit individuals to slander long standing User Groups somewhat anonymously without checks and balances. I am sure you have also suspected that the negative reviews are disgruntled and jilted Timeshare Sales staff that lost commission due to TUG advice. Could be the principal exit companies or sales staff.

Really irks me when the likes of Facebook and other big tech (Trust Pilot, Google, ebay, etc) has no means of support to counter these false claims.

yea they constantly solicit businesses for money to help "build their reputation"...

if i had to put money on the rest of the story...this individual likely provides or is involved with a service that provides their own "assistance" for getting someone out of a timeshare.

I'm sure the truth will come out eventually. Wouldnt it be wild to discover this was actually a long time TUG member using a fake name?

That guy was very persistent. He tried to post another 2 times today (same post both times) but the TUG FB auto-Admin assistant declined his posts. If I had the ability as a moderator I would put him on post approval. @TUGBrian maybe you can do that? I have a feeling we have not heard the last of his comments.

Do you have suspicions that it's a long time member? Doesn't Facebook require users to use their real name per their ToS?

requires A valid name, doesnt necessarily have to be spelled correctly.

I don't know that Facebook does require a member to use their real name on their posts. I think maybe you need to register with you real name but can go by another name on your page. I know of several women who do not use their real names on FB for privacy. One woman I used to work with whose name is Betty .... used the name of Betty Boop so patients she looked after and their families couldnt find her on FB. Another woman was high up in management in the company she worked for and used her middle name and a variation of her maiden name so nobody at work could find her.

The guy who posted the Trustpilot review was/is registered (& a member of the TUG FB group) using the same name.

No need to ban this guy, but there is the ability in FB groups to put members on post approval for X number of days or permanently. They can still post but the post wont be published until it is approved. Another group I am a moderator on have done that with a member who insists on posting selfies of himself (usually with no shirt on) pretty much daily.

I do think Facebook allows for certain waivers of the real name policy in certain situations. I have a cousin who is a nurse that uses a different variation of her real name.

I think many people with an interest in making money off the timeshare industry show up at Tug and other social media sites. They could use an alias profile to steer potential clients to their business. Businesses that might do this include timeshare exit, attorneys, rental groups and resorts.

Anyone can use any name on Facebook. It's against the tos but not illegal.

arent too many people who would go out of their way to register and leave a negative review of a company for an argument they had with a random person on facebook without some sort of ulterior motive. he went off on someone today claiming they were providing "legal advice" while not being a lawyer...and then shortly after posted the review.

folks are welcome to make silly arguments on the facebook page, it makes for engaging content. that would change if it turns out this person is privately promoting himself or some other exit company instead.

We see this ALL THE TIME, on the facebook page....thankfully people eventually make it super obvious (or we get reports that they sent them private messages offering their help or claiming their relative/friend/etc used this company to help them!)

ive already seen one of his posts that was declined because he posted a link to a known exit company...i doubt itll be much longer before the rest of the story comes out!

I also have never heard of TrustPilot and have no idea how significant a review on that site might be. But if you're concerned about it, I would reply by pointing out your decades of operating the TUG site and that you seek no compensation for providing the information you provide. Information like timeshare exit companies seem to all be scammers. Information like what has happened after people stop paying their maintenance fees. That information is the result of having received feedback from hundreds of timeshare owners. As such, that feedback is very much valuable and pertinent information to share with others.

But if the TrustPilot reviewer is posting links to a known exit company, and that's his ulterior motive, I would file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Denigrate you in order to refer people to an exit business in which he (or she) may have an interest. And that business most likely being a scam. That TrustPilot review under those circumstances could be deemed to be illegal.

and to continue on this trend, we had an individual in the timeshare business who has been a TUG member for over 10 years give us a 1 star review for choosing to not accept paid advertisement/promotions for his business. (they also left a 1star review of TUG in other locations as well)

It never ceases to amaze me at how many shady people work in the timeshare industry. safe to say our decision to avoid engaging in a relationship with this entity was the right choice given this activity.

Reading some of the reviews, I see one where it looks like they initially gave a 5 star review three years ago but then updated it to 2 stars a year ago. I guess they must have felt the advice wasn't as good?

well thats disappointing...ill have to reach out to inquire what changed. I cant fix an issue if I dont have any details. at least with the previous 1 star reviews I know full well what the problem was!

they are still TUG members....even post on the forums and still visit (as of june 2026) and by all accounts were very happy to have found TUG!

Facebook is such an insane place
I was not following the trial but stopped to read one post. As my reward my feed is full of posts about the trial of the mother who allegedly killed her children. Multiple people want her burned at the stake and a similar number insist the husband did it. People get into fights, say the most inappropriate things, and hide behind fake names. Sometimes it is actually entertaining
