What’s the fate of the Villa Roma in the Catskills?

A long awaited purchase of this NY resort is once again delayed as the purchaser extends the closing date. Hundreds of timeshare owners are not certain of how they’ll be embraced by the buyer of the hotel and its amenities. A resurgence of interest in the Catskills could bode well for a new owner willing to upgrade the property but will modernization of the timeshare villas fall entirely on the families who own the intervals? Who has up to date info on this timeshare story?

The latest seems to be that the buyer walked away. Perhaps a financing issue. Rumors abound but I’m surprised a big brand doesn’t step in and grab a fire sale bargain. Other than the pioneering Poconos resorts there are no large scale resorts in the world of time sharing in the entire Northeast. With the NYC market 125 miles away and the Catskills having a huge renaissance this should be a target. The existing owners are deeded but they face the choice of watching the place deteriorate further or getting bought out. I don’t know what the sales price was but for a Wyndham it should be attractive.

I have a friend who currently lives in Rockland County who has owned there for years. I have to talk to her to see what’s up. She’s going to be moving to Florida soon.

BTW- hello. I’m an ex Sullivan County resident! Moved away 3 years ago.

Buyer is back and ready to deal. 435 acres plus all the infrastructure seems like a good deal for $15 million. Has a devoted customer base too. Not a lot of places to stay in that area either, definitely none of this scale.

We stayed here in August - needs a LOT of investment and renovation, with much deferred maintenance. It seemed popular; they also put some effort behind making it a conference space too. That business was hit very hard in recent years but at 90 miles from NYC it has potential for offsite meetings and confrences. It would be nice to see it become a destination resort again.

As of Labor Day 2024 the deal for the sale of Villa Roma resort is back on, per the Sullivan County Industrial Development Authority. Closing next week. Promised upgrade investment of over $20 million. Same buyer has moved Heaven and Earth to secure financing so timeshare owners—a very long term, multigenerational group—should be patient and let the new buyer take the reins and do the work. A rising tide will lift their boats too

We haven't been there in ages, but we loved it there. Hope it's onward and upward for them!

We have 4 2 br units reserved there in mid october for a family get together that ends with a wedding in the area.
Sounds like fun!

The sale finally closed.

I don’t think the timeshare owners are included in this sale. It will be a home run for them if the new owner renovates the property and the infrastructure. I don’t know the relationship between the resort and the timeshare units; but I wonder if the new owner is able to levy an assessment against the timeshare units for a percentage of the property improvements.
