In August, I'll be arriving three to four hours before the rest of my party and wanted to know if there was anything (even a mall) to do within 1/2 hr. of the airport (I will have a rental car). Obviously I'll have to get my luggage and won't be able to reenter the airport terminals (although I've never been, the map on it's website makes it look like a very small airport).

We'll be staying at the Horizons by Marriott, any comments regarding this resort? Any recommendations for lunch/dinner? Any "must do's"? Obviously this is our first time here (maybe our last).

Thanks for any help/advice you can give.

I can't really answer questions about the airport but, I do have a question. Are you talking about the airport in Springfield or the new airport their building in Branson? I wasn't aware of the opening date and first flights directly into Branson.

If you're going to Sprinfield, it's really a rather small city. There should be plenty to do. If you're looking for an interesting lunch in the Springfield area that's not a chain restaurant, Lamberts (home of throwed rolls) is unique. I'm not a huge fan of their food, I find it mediocre at best, but they do have really good rolls and it's a fun, reasonably priced place to eat. Be prepared to pay by check or cash. The last time we were there, they did not take credit cards. Also be prepared for a wait around traditional meal times. The lines can get very long to get into this place.

Horizon's is one of the best timeshares in Branson. I still feel like it's a "lite" version of Marriott but, very high quality and the best pool complex in the Branson area. It's a "in town" timeshare so there really are no views, other than the pool, but it has a convenient location for getting around IMO.

There is a link in my signature which will take you to our timeshare photo's we've collected. I have a couple of albums from Horizon by Marriott Branson in those albums. There are probably more photo's on the Webshots site but, I prefer the layout of the Photo.net site. Our latest stay at Horizons, which was this past December, are on both the Photo.net site and the Webshots.com sites. I also have an album from a summer stay at Horizons posted on Webshots.com site which I have not put on Photo.net. At any rate, any of the albums should give you a good idea of the resort.

I'm flying into SGF (Springfield-Branson). I didn't know there was a regional airport in Branson - sorry for the confusion. Thanks so much for your insight into the Marriott and suggestions for Springfield.:)

NEW Branson Airport

The NEW airport in Brasnson is scheduled to open in May. I believe AirTran is the only airline. I looked at flying down from north-central IL and it was $300 roundtrip AND I had to go through Atlanta to do it. No way. I'll drive the 8 hours each way. :wall:

They're in the process of building and airport in Branson. I'm not certain when it will accept it's first flight. Personally, I think they're nuts. Unless of course Disney does actually come to town.

I'm not really certain where SGF is in relationship to Springfield and what might be around the airport, if anything.

As far as good restaurants in Branson, IMO, there really isn't any. There is a conglomeration of restaurants at the Branson Landing, which is an outdoor shopping/dining center in downtown Branson. Many people like Shorty Small's. There's also a lot of people who like Fall Creek Steakhouse. Both are adaquate but nothing really special IMO. Shorty Small's does have an interesting atmosphere, decent food and reasonable prices. We usually stop in MacFarlands at least once per trip. Again, nothing special but, I do like their fried green tomatos. If you want to play a trick on your family, make arrangements to sit at the "special" round table. Sometime during your meal this table will begin to very slowly rise. It's fun to watch people who don't know what's happening and the table rises so slowly that they won't notice it for some time.

I've posted some information on another thread concerning the new Branson airport. Check that out.

Yes, they will be open in late Spring and will be serviced by a company called AirTran. They'll have direct flights to Atlanta and Milwaukee.

As far as Springfield activities, there are a ton of restaurants (especially around Glenstone and Kearney), a full-sized indoor mall, and the main tourist hot spot is Bass Pro Shops/Outdoor Wildlife Museum located on the corner of Sunshine and Campbell - about 15 -20 minutes from the Springfield airport.

Good luck!

Have you checked recently? They've announced a new direct route to Milwaukee within the last couple of weeks. That might be perfect for you.

I second the thought of you going to Bass Pro in Springfield. It is their largest store and very unique. There is a smaller version at Branson Landing in downtown Branson.

The Springfield airport is very small. I recently pickup a girlfriend there and waited in the parking lot in my car and could see all of the exits from there.

Additionally, there is Battlefield Mall, plus lots of strip shopping centers near the mall -- easy access to and from the airport. There are a couple of nice quilt shops in Springfield.

Have fun !

cjareed is correct - the mall I was referring to is called Battlefield Mall (Battlefied and Glenstone). The airport is in the NW part of Springfield and the mall is in the SE part - so it'll take a good 20-25 minutes to get there driving through town.

I forgot to mention that Bass Pro has a very nice restaurant on-site called Hemmingways.

There's also a McDonalds on-site and lots of restaurant options near the Bass Pro vicinity.
