So we arrived in Vegas for 8 days yesterday and are staying at the JW Marroitt. We plan to visit Hover Dam and see Mystere. What are some of the must do while we are here?

Las Vegas Top 10

Shux, with 8 whole days to spend in Las Vegas, it should easily be possible to take advantage of all 10 items on the list of Las Vegas Top Ten Values.

Good luck.

Have fun.

Oh my gosh! Have fun! I love walking the strip - having lunch at Caesar's at Wolfgang Puck with a glass of wine in the middle of the day. Somehow drinking at noon in VEGAS doesn't seem so naughty. :hysterical: Don't miss the Venetian either. ENJOY!!!!

You are close to Red Rock Canyon, so you should go there. Even if you don't like hiking, there is a cool loop you can drive through. You have time to go to Valley of Fire one day, and the weather shouldn't be too hot. If you are into ghost towns, you could go out to Calico one day, too. If you just want to stay in or near Vegas, try some of the things here: Free Things to do in Vegas. You can also get discounted tickets to shows and even dinners at the half price ticket booths (see here for locations).

David Brenner will be playing at the SunCoast Casino next weekend. That's in your back yard. He's a very topical (and mostly clean) comedian, if you like that. The showroom is intimate, with tables and chairs and seats maybe 500.

One night plan to go to the Fremont Street Experience and see the light and sound shows. They are free and really good.

There are tons of local things to do in Summerlin if you ask around.

Hope this is enough to get you started.

Agree with Fern, Red Rock Canyon is a "MUST DO". Just beautiful. We spent a week in Vegas, and went to Red Rock every day ('course, we love to hike). Going back in April, 2009 and can't wait to take our friends there.

Two shows that I highly recommend are The Mac King Comedy Magic Show, afternoons at Harrah's, and The Vinnie Favorito Show at O'Shea's. We see Mac King every time we're in Vegas. It's always the same show but we never get tired of it. It's always funny and very entertaining. You can usually get free tickets (for the price of one $8 drink) in the Carnaval Court between Harrah's and the Imperial Palace.

Vinnie Favorito is about the funniest guy we have ever seen. You will laugh 'til you cry. This is definitely an adult show, so if you're easily offended by off-color humor and language...don't go. Otherwise, don't miss it! "What's On" magazine usually has 2-for-1 tickets to his show which will get two of you in for $40.

Things to do

There are two other suggestions I would make. One is to drive to Mt. Charleston. It's an easy drive about 45 minutes NW of LAS. There is a lodge there where you can have lunch outside. Food is good and the temp will be a pleasant change from Las.

Secondly, I would hgihly recommend the float trip down the Colorado river. It's by Black Canyon River Adventures. Here is the link.

There is no whitewater and the trip starts just South of Hoover Dam.

I second the recommendation of going to Valley of Fire.

Also... we saw Cirque du Soleil's LOVE and it was fantastic! The tickets were pricey (but I guess that's par for the course in Vegas) but I thought it was worth every penny! My jaw stayed dropped open for most of the show because I was so amazed at all that we saw (and heard).

After a couple days on the strip, I usually get a little buggy. A trip to lake mead often helps me. An afternoon of swimming, scuba diving & or just simply lazing around on or in the water makes me feel much more grounded (so to speak).

Another must do is the Liberaci museum. It's one of those places you think you wouldn't be interested in, and then turns into a real find.

Fern has a list she continues to post on here of 100 free things to do.

Go to Jean Pierre's Patisserie in Bellaggio for a chocolate souffle crepe...or a gelato...or a panini...or any other of their wonderful goodies!

I would avoid Mystere and see "O" or KA". Mystere is a simple and a little silly and maybe good for children, but there are better shows to see in Vegas. I didn't see Love, but I am sure that it is better than Mystere. If you call "O" and they tell you they are sold out, call back every morning and every afternoon to see if they have any cancellations. "O" is the best and represents what Vegas has to offer and KA" is amazing. Mystere can be done anywhere. Here is a link for KA"

Let me preface this by saying that it is just my opinion, but I have seen Mystere several times including this past June, have seen O once and saw Ka this past June. I was bored with KA. Performances by the humans did not do anything for me. O was entertaining. Mystere was just as thrilling and entertaining this last time as it was the first time I saw. The human performances were visually stunning, graceful, athletic and mind boggling.

Check out the dolphins at the Mirage, and the sharks at the Mandalay Bay...I think that's where they are...someone correct this if I've missed the boat.

I can recommend the show Le Reve at the Wynn. It's Cirque-like, though not a part of the Cirque du Soleil family. The theater is amazing and every seat is great. Here's a YouTube clip that will give you a bit of an idea of what it's like, but you really have to be there in person to get the full effect. It's really indescribably entertaining and awe-inspiring.

ThanksTuggers

Thanks to all you tuggers, you made thison great trip.We might have to come back just to get through all of the great suggestions. We have spent one, day around Hoover dam and picture doesn’t it justice. Sitting at the fountain restaurant with a beer and watching the fountain was truly very romantic with Eiffel tower in the background.
