My daughter and son-in-law are looking to buy a house or condo in MA.. They looked today at a condex. It is a condo, but only has 2 units. Basically a 2 family house, owned by 2 seperate families. I don't understand this at all. It sounds to me like a semi-attached house. However, there would be association fees. My daughter said that a builder bought the house. It has 2 units, one on each side. He renovated it, and is now selling each unit as a condo. Therefore, calling it a condex. I never heard of this term. Who manages the money? Who makes the decisions?

Sounds like someone's trying to combine condo and duplex.
Duplex:
1. A house divided into two living units or residences, usually having separate entrances.

The difference in semantics may lie in the "condo" side of the word. You can own your own duplex and you can own your own condo, but the condo usually comes with exterior maintenance, landscaping, trash removal, etc, included.
