What does Lock Out mean?

It refers to a type of unit which might be a combination of a one bedroom unit and a studio unit with adjoining doors. The owner of the unit could use the whole thing as a two-bedroom unit, or "lock it off" or "lock out" into two separate units. There could be other combinations such as a three bedroom unit that divides into a two-bedroom and a one-bedroom or some other combination.

One might use the one-bedroom unit for yourself and trade away the studio unit, or you might get a two week vacation out of using the one bedroom side for one week followed by the studio side for the next week, or use them that way for two separate one-week vacations during the year. Or you might deposit the two halves for two separate exchanges--depending on the resort and what they will allow.

If you are looking to rent one, you might look at it as renting a nice hotel room without the "condo" living space of a typical timeshare unit. They do vary in +/- "kitchenette stuff", dressing area, balcony etc...

Lock-offs, studios, small one bdrm, small side of the villa= Lock Off unit

Figure it this way, if you rent a lock off unit you will probably, with a few exceptions,

be in a "hotel type" unit with a small kitchenette.

A one bdrm unit will have a full kitchen and a living room and other amenities.

A one bdrm + a lockoff = one 2 bdrm unit.

Sometimes folks use the lock off to allow them to vacation for two weeks in a place like Hawaii where travel is expensive to get there. One week they'll use the full one bdrm side and the next week they'll stay in the lock off side.

Lock offs are often rented out to pay for the maintenance fees (annual fees to have a timeshare) while owners still vacation in the one bdrm side. This can ofen be seen in the Marriotts in Aruba and Hawaii but also in other high end timeshares as well.

Disney Vacation Club calls lockoffs studios and the full two bdrm unit is called a one bdrm lockoff.

Most other developers call their lock-offs, just that, lockoff, or the small side of a split villa.

There are many configurations of lock off units. We own a 3BR lock off that is a 1BR/1 bath on one side and a 2BR/2 bath on the other. Both sides have full kitchens, although the 1BR side has a smaller refrig and a small range no oven configuration.

We have also seen where a 2BR lock off is two full 1BR units, identical on either side . . . and also the 2BR configuration where one side has the mini-kitchen and the other a full kitchen but both have private bedrooms (no studio).

I have also read of 4BR with two 2BR/2 bath units - - I think in Williamsburg at Sunterra.

Some of the Fairfields have a small and larger one bdrm configuration. Also the Vistana Villages comes to mind with the same configuration. There is usually significantly more space in the larger one bdrm side versus the other smaller one bdrm side. I've never heard of two identical sides but anything is possible I guess.

Lock Off = Good. Lock Out = Not Good.

Lock-off is 1 of those multi-suite timeshare units that can be used all together as 1 large villa, or alternatively as separate, smaller stand-alone components that can be locked off from each other.

Lock Out is what happens when you don't pay your timeshare maintenence fees & because of that you can't check in for your fixed week or make a reservation for your floating week -- your timeshare fees are in arrears so you're locked out until you pay up everything that you owe.

Here is a link to Vistana Resort Orlando two bedroom "Lock-Off".
http://www.starwoodhotels.com/shera...ndex.html?propertyID=5608#photo_section_1Link

They call the larger bedroom a "Premium One Bedroom villa" and the smaller one bedroom just a "One Bedroom Villa". The picture at the bottom is also of the "kitchenette" on the right side of the One Bedroom unit.

Just "mouse over" the thumbnails to see the different picture titles.

I believe the new section at Vacation Villages at Parkway in Orlando is where we saw the 2 equal sized 1BR units sold "together" as a 2BR lockoff.

I think there are a couple of timeshares that lock-off into three units, but they are very rare.
