I’m on Cliff’s phone right now. My phone sends and receives mail. I can text back and forth. Nextdoor works. The navigation apps work. I can use my banking app or CVS app. But anything I want to do sitting in my favorite chair with one eye on the TV can’t be accessed — Tug, Amazon, Facebook, google NOTHING! I’ve turned wifi on and off thinking something is wrong with our wifi even though my desk top works. I was good this morning for two hours, then it stopped working about 9:30 as we were trying to get out the door. Back home at 1pm with still no access. How on earth can some things work, but others just go directly to round and round death spiral?

Suggestion only...Try pressing and hold the start button for five (5) minutes.
Then try to sign on into your phone.

pedro47 beat me to it. Do a 'hard reset' on it, then restart it. Mine (a Google Pixel) needs to have me hold the down volume button and Start button until it goes dark, then (after a few seconds) restart it. That seems to reset everything.

It happens so rarely that I don’t think of it the next time it does. Phone was six years old last month — I don’t recall it freezing up before, but likely it has. Dearly departed iPad used to do it semi regularly.

When you have a glitch on your phone, that is, a pause and/or an inability to do the task you just asked of it, Reboot the phone!!!!
It's as good as being your own IT guy!!!!

HERE'S HOW: Hold down the ON/OFF button on the right side WHILE at the same time holding down the left side's TOP VOLUME button.
Hold both down at the same time for a few seconds. I'd say, maybe 5-7 seconds....Then Select SLIDE TO POWER OFF or TURN PHONE OFF.
It will power OFF.......
Then wait 15-20 seconds..... Then hold the RIGHT button down 1-2 seconds again to start the phone up again. You're done.
Trying to simplify, it's called a Hard Rebooting of your phone, not exactly the same as restarting or resetting. There's a difference.

IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM, and "fixes" the phone from acting wacky!!!!
Do it as often as it acts up, or do it weekly, just because..

Read these quotes:

A "hard reboot" refers to completely shutting down a device and then restarting it, essentially turning the power off and on again, while a "restart" generally means initiating a system restart without fully powering down, effectively a soft reboot where the operating system gracefully closes applications and restarts while still powered on; a hard reboot is considered a more forceful option used when a device becomes unresponsive, while a restart is a more typical way to refresh a system.

A "resetting" your phone refers to completely wiping all your data and settings, essentially returning it to factory condition, while "rebooting" simply means turning your phone off and on again, which can fix minor software issues without deleting any personal information; essentially, a reset erases everything, while a reboot is a fresh start with the current settings.

Your programs and settings will remain the same when you reboot or restart. Don't let the term "soft reset" get confused with completely resetting your device, or conducting a "hard reset". Resetting is equivalent to erasing, as you are returning a device, program, or software back to its factory default state.

REBOOT/RESTART VS RESET

Before attempting to reboot, restart, or reset your device, it's important to know the difference between them, as one is more permanent than the others.
Rebooting and restarting your device are inherently the same thing, you are turning the device off and back on again in order to start with a clean slate so your programs can run normally. Sometimes, rebooting/restarting may be referred to as a "soft reset", which means the exact same thing. Your programs and settings will remain the same when you reboot or restart.
Don't let the term "soft reset" get confused with completely resetting your device, or conducting a "hard reset". Resetting is equivalent to erasing, as you are returning a device, program, or software back to its factory default state. Resetting your device will erase all of your settings and programs, so you will want to be 100% sure before you make a choice to perform a device reset.

THE WHY
Let's focus on rebooting/restarting, as it is more common when troubleshooting. Restarting a device gives the user a clean slate to work with, as any background processes or troublesome code gets wiped clean. These background issues are fairly common in devices and can arise in several ways. Restarting your device could resolve background processes causing a decrease in speed that are still running, shut down browsers that are using up too much memory, as well as reconnect to Wi-Fi networks that are being interfered with. Occasionally, your hardware or drives may malfunction, or your computer's RAM might be utilized to its limitations. Rebooting your device could help resolve many of those issues.

You may be wondering, how you will know if one of the issues above applies to your device? The average user may not be able to diagnose exactly what is wrong with your technology, but it should be fairly obvious to you if something is wrong, as you will begin to experience performance issues. Ultimately, you as a standard user may not need to know or understand exactly which of the above-listed issues has taken place if a reboot serves as the solution. If a problem persists or returns after a reboot, that's when your IT team will explore the specifics to understand what might be going wrong inside your device.

THE WHEN
It is best to restart your devices at least once per week. If this is outside of your habits, simply set a calendar reminder to restart your computer consistently. For example, you could dedicate your first 5 minutes every Friday morning or the last 5 minutes of the day to rebooting.

Aside from weekly reboots, if you are experiencing performance issues the best first step to begin finding a resolution is to restart your device. These performance issues could range from your device freezing, crashing, or overheating to program-specific performance issues that you can't quite diagnose. Restarting could solve the issue right off the bat and save you time. However, if an issue keeps happening, it is best to reach out to your IT team.

While it may be a hassle to close out all programs and files you are working on, restarting your technology is a key troubleshooting step for simple tech issues many users experience daily.
The next time your device isn't cooperating, we hope rebooting is a helpful step in the troubleshooting process.

... I was going to say that space aliens are messing with it.
But these answers seem more practical.
