What are the new NFL playoff overtime rules? What to know

Yes, this rule was already in effect as of last year so I wouldn't call it "new". There is talk about putting this rule into effect for the regular season too.

One tweak to this rule that I would like to see is this. If the team that has the opening possession (likely the team that won the coin toss) scores a TD on its opening drive, it must go for the two-point conversion. The other team when it gets the ball must obviously score a TD to keep the game going but, if the first team failed on its 2-pt. conversion attempt, the other team after scoring a TD can go for the 1-pt. (kick) conversion and win the game.

This might make the team that won the coin toss think twice about taking first possession.

I prefer the old "sudden death" approach.
It put the burden on the defense, where it should be.

The problem with that is the team that won the coin toss had a much higher probability of winning. So it really wasn't the teams that decided the winner, it was the coin toss.

I prefer the CFL rules

CFL overtime rules, explained

Here is how the format works in the CFL if overtime is required after playing to a tie in regulation:

  • Each team is given an equal number of offensive possessions.
  • A coin toss determines which team starts on offense first.
  • The first team starts its drive with the ball at its opponent's 35-yard line. Once that team scores or turns the ball over, the second team gets an opportunity to score. The second team also starts its drive at the 35-yard line.
  • If a team scores a touchdown, that team must attempt a two-point conversion.
  • If one team is ahead after both teams are given an opportunity to score, then that team is declared the winner.
  • If both teams are still tied, then they each get another opportunity to score from the 35-yard line.
  • During the regular season, the game can be declared a draw if the score remains tied after each team gets two attempts to score.
  • During the playoffs, the overtime continues until there is a winner.

  • A coin toss determines which team starts on offense first.
Just a slight correction. The winner of the coin toss chooses who starts first. Sometimes the winner chooses to let the other team start so it can see what it has to match or beat.

So it really wasn't the teams that decided the winner, it was the coin toss.
I'd actually like to see the statistics of how many OT games were won by the team that won the coin toss under the old rules. If I had to guess, I'd say about 75%.

I'm sure it's out there (too lazy to search right now), but I seem to recall that is about the right percentage under the old rules.

This is not a new NFL Playoff Game Overtime Rule:
The all American Team the Dallas Cowboy have loss their playoff game, at home.. The owner needs to fire the coach and every defensive linemen & defensive back player. IMHO

The Packers have scored 48 points and the game is not even over.
