For those of you who have stayed at WKORV (or anywhere at Ka'anapali) during the winter months, how is the whale watching from the ocean front rooms? If you see whales, is it just their spouts or can you actually see them breaching? Do they stay pretty much midway between the islands or are they near shore? I know we could see them well if we went on a boat but I was wondering how well we could expect to see them from the lanai. Thanks for any insight.

The whales come pretty close to shore. If you're right on the ocean, you'll have a great view of the whales.

Edited to Add: We saw them from the room at the Marriott Maui while taking a tour. They seemed preety close to shore.

We took the boat a couple of years ago, and although it was towards the end of the winter (mid April) we still saw several whales. One of them completely breached out of the water. It was just amazing! I've never seen them from the room - maybe I need binoculars :)

We saw them in mid-Dec '06 behind the Westin hotel next to Whaler's Village. They were a good bit off shore (too far to swim) but certainly visible.

We spent a week at WKORV in February 06 and they were very visible from the resort. Especially right before sunset. Enjoy!:D Nancy

We just got back a few weeks ago. We saw 3 whales flip their tails up, but that's about it. One whale breached the surface, but it was about a mile and a half away.
The group before us got pretty close. They actually had to stop the boat and let the whale coming within a few dozen yards.

We were at the Westin resort about a month ago. We saw a lot of whales and they were very active. We could see spouting, breaching and banging of their tails on the water. We could see them from the balcony or the beach, but they were out quite aways. It was amazing!
