Starwood Announces The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa and The Westin Riverfront Mountain Villas in Avon Colorado
Wednesday January 3, 3:08 pm ET
New Westin to Offer Scenic Views and Year-Round Outdoor Recreation

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.® (NYSE: HOT - News) today announced The Westin® Riverfront Resort & Spa - a 235-room full service hotel and resort facility, which is currently under construction and being developed by East West Partners - and The Westin Riverfront Mountain Villas, a 113-unit Westin vacation ownership resort being developed by Starwood Vacation Ownership. The entire mixed-use project will bring together the natural beauty of the region with The Westin brand's signature products and services, designed to help guests feel at their personal best.

Surrounded by mountains, The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa is anticipated to open in time for the 2008 ski season, followed shortly thereafter by the first phase of The Westin Riverfront Mountain Villas. The complex will include a spa and fitness facility, restaurants and approximately 4,700 square feet of meeting space. It will also feature a pedestrian-friendly retail plaza with shops, restaurants and a high-speed eight-passenger gondola that will transport skiers and snowboarders to the adjacent Beaver Creek Ski Resort Area.

"Westin is delighted to add this highly anticipated resort to its growing portfolio of hotels," said Sue Brush, senior vice president, Westin Hotels & Resorts. "The broad array of recreational and relaxation options, combined with Westin's signature products and services, will bring new meaning to personal renewal for guests."

The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa will offer the full array of The Westin brand's products, services and amenities. Guests will luxuriate in The Westin Heavenly Bed® and unwind with the help of Westin's new sensory welcome, consisting of a white tea scent, music, lighting and botanicals.

Starwood Vacation Ownership will develop a total of 113 two-bedroom (lock-off) vacation ownership units on the east and west sides of the hotel. The vacation ownership units will have full access to all hotel amenities, including concierge services, the ski valet and gondola, the park and the bike trail that will front Eagle River. Sales of The Westin vacation ownership resort will kick off by 2008. Starwood Vacation Ownership has developed two other highly successful vacation ownership resorts in Avon: Sheraton Mountain Vista and Lakeside Terrace.

"Starwood Vacation Ownership is excited to extend our presence with this project, our fourth resort in Colorado and our first Westin-branded vacation ownership resort in the area," said Sergio Rivera, president real estate development, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. "With this new Westin resort, SVO will now offer our full complement of vacation ownership opportunities in Colorado, ranging from a luxury fractional resort within the St. Regis Resort, Aspen to the Sheraton Mountain Vista in Avon, Colorado."

With year-round attractions for outdoor enthusiasts, including access to world-class skiing, Avon is the ideal location for high-end vacation ownership. The first-ever gondola connecting Avon to nearby Beaver Creek will significantly enhance the vacation experience for ski-lovers by eliminating the need for ground transportation to the slopes.

East West Partners, a prominent local company with vast experience in mountain development, is the master developer of the project. "We are very excited about Starwood's participation in the Riverfront development. They bring a level of quality and experience that will enhance the entire project," said Chuck Madison, senior partner for East West Partners.

So how close will this be to SMV and LT?

I'm still trying to learn about the existing Starwood timeshares there :D . Has anyone seen the construction and know how close this is to Sheraton Mountain Vista and Lakeside Terrace?

I have seen the site of the new westin riverfront project. my best guess is that it is about 150 yards away from smv. I imagine prices for a ski week will be in the $50k range.

Will SMV owners have hotel access also? How will this TS compare to SMV?

My guess is smv owners will have access to all amenities that cost additional money (as I guess anyone on the street would)-I would imagine they will make it so you can charge back to your room at SMV, but I imagine any of the "free amenities" pool etc will not be accesible. Typically Thee westin timeshares are a bit nicer/fancier than the sheraton timeshares. However in my opinion the mountain vista is a bit nicer/fancier (granite/marble etc) than the other sheraton properties that I have seen, so I imagine it will be a bit of a step up in terms of room quality etc, with the biggest difference being that this property will be right at the gondola and SMV is about 150 yards away.

Westin Report

I was in Avon just about 2 weeks ago and got some additional information about the Westin. The hotel will be operated by Westin but each hotel room will be owned by individuals.

I checked out the sales office in the heart of Beaver Creek Village and based on the scale model it's looks fabulous.

The Gondola "hut" is already in place as well as the polls to support it. The only thing not there is the wires and the cars. The Gondola is expected to start operations next ski season 2007 / 2008. BC is expected to build another ski lift at the drop off spot at the closest lift to Avon.

The Gondola is supposed to be the only transportation to Beaver Creek. The bus system in Avon is going to remain as is except for the runs up to BC village (2 miles). The buses will run around town and stop all over the place but the destination for skiers will be the Westin and the Gondola!!!

From the Sheraton it is an easy walk and about 1/4 mile or less. The bus would be the alternative.

The Hotel is a shell right now of about 6 floors with construction all week long.

While on the construction note: While at the Sheraton we heard nothing from the construction for adding the new AC system. You ask "Why?" Well, the higher ups in Starwood decided it was not going through with the project and after 3 weeks ordered that the construction crew reverse all it did and then vacate!!! The owners there should be real mad!!!

Any questions that I can answer about Avon, Sheraton Mtn Vista or Beaver Creek area?

I wish they'd pick somewhere other than CO again! Another in the Caribbean would be awesome!

Caribbean is coming

I don't know exactly where but they are doing at least 2 in the caribbean and another in Mexico. Maybe someone more familiar with Starwood would know the specifics.

Is there any truth to the rumors that SVO might drop Lakeside Terrace in the future ? I was once told not buy resale there because it is high on list of resorts to dropped; costs too much to refurbish ?

Is this really true? A lot of people park and ride the bus up to the BC village. If they will have to ride the gondola, or drive and pay $25/day for parking, that could make for some long lines.

I was in BC in January and talked with a sales guy. Probably worth repeating that the TS units will be built last, ie after the full ownership hotel rooms, and thus it will be at least a couple of years before anyone could trade in, etc.

You can still park and ride if you want or you could get the gondola and take the shuttle bus instead of the lift at Bachlor's Landing. Sorry, I thought that most were taking the bus from their hotel / TS and riding it up to BC village.
