They look similar but between these two resorts, which one is better and why?

If you are looking to go on an II exchange or getaway, Royal Sands will be mandatory AI where Westin Lagunamar isn't. Lagunamar is also better located across the street from La Isla Shopping Mall. Royal Sands isn't too far away though.

I’ve stayed at both. Can’t go wrong with either one but Royal Has mandatory AI if exchanging.

Also been to both. Kids activities at Royal Sands were better (not sure if that changed after Covid). We rented from Royal Sands owner so AI was not mandatory.

Both are nice. Lagunamar has laundry and cooking in all size units(ovens are convection/microwave combos). If you are in a 2BD or 1BD at the Sands , the balcony is massive. Loungers are nicer at Lagunamar, (they have cushions). Royal Sands is closer to the grocery store and their onsite market is more reasonably priced compared to Westin.

If you are in a Studio then Lagunamar is a clear winner. Larger units, it will depend on your preferences. Royals have a full oven/stove in the larger units. Lagunamar has multiple gas grills on the property for owner use.

Pickleball is available at the Westin, not sure about Royals
