I live in Orlando and a relative is wanting to sell his 'value season' (off peak) timeshare at Westgate Palace in Orlando, FL. I've been thinking of getting a timeshare at this time and I would like to be able to purchase it and deposit it with RCI or II for an exchange to travel and visit other resorts. I've looked through this board and found very little information/comments about this particular resort. I called Westgate and they have been good to me in terms of getting details and MFs of the timeshare. They even told me that I could get a peak season with them for $1k more than what my relative has paid. But I basically strayed away from purchasing from them. I can work out a good price on getting this, but was wondering about the resort and trading value to be able to get to places my family would like to visit. Please advice or maybe recommend another alternative. Also, what are the typical closing costs and transfer fees associated with this resale purchase..

dude,
do you self a favor and stay away for waste er westgate properties.
just do a search on tug and read of all the way they try to screw there owners every day.

plus you can get better unit for less on ebay..

i am sure they would love to "give you a deal" and only charge 1000 above what your friend paid for something that in this day and time has little value.

right now on the tug market place, click on orlando in the FOR SALE section, and see a cypress pointe 3 bed lock off, diamond time for only $2500.. the resort HOA is more owner friendly and a couple tuggers here are on the board.

50 times better than wastegate will ever be in term of owners treatment by management.

i say PASS on that deal. which is not a deal at all..Value is "dog time" weeks.

beware of orlando block.. if you own in orlando you can not trade into orlando...bet they did not tell you that....

ALL Wastegates are mediocre timeshares with terrible sales pressure (even on owners) and management while Wastegate Palace takes it a step further with a failed hotel conversion in a sketchy area - STAY AWAY!!!

Owning an Orlando timeshare can be a great deal and there are literally thousands out there that are great to buy/own/use - and now usually VERY inexpensive. Go for one of those (there are FREE weeks posted by a few owners at my favorite Orlando resort - Cypress Pointe - on their web site right now).

But go for any of the many deals you'll easily find - just AVOID WASTEGATE or you'll be very sorry. Really. And the Palace is the worst of a bad bunch in Orlando. Avoid it like rotten cabbage.

You need to do your own research as well as listen to other people and sift thru the opinions and facts. Take the above 2 statements. If you go to Tripadvisor and see what others say concerning Cypress Gardens and Westgate Palace, you will see both resorts are given the same 3 1/2 star rating with 37% +/- rate both resorts as excellent. Needless to say they also have their distractors. You need to read these as well as others and assess for yourself based on your expectations.

As for the trade block mentioned above, I believe that is a RCI company policy and whereas Westgate Palace trades thru II this trade block would not apply to you. I have had relatively little trouble exchanging into the Orlando area as I am using II. I have read that people in Orange Lake thru RCI have been limited to a 1 in every 4 year when returning to their own resort. That is another RCI block you need to consider when buying a timeshare. Due diligence in your research will help you eliminate pitfalls such as these.

Regardless of where you buy, make sure it is in an area YOU would like to go to that resort and not somewhere where you might not want to vacation. As for exchanging, you will find by reading this great source (TUG) that exchanging to where one wants to exchange into is getting progressively harder every year.

Good luck in your decision making process.

Hi, and Welcome to TUG.

The sad truth is, your relative will probably have to "give away" his timeshare plus pay the transfer costs and probably the next year's maintenance dues just to get a buyer.

To verify the above statement, look at eBay and see how many timeshare do not sell for $1.

Look at the Bargain Deals section on this website. There are many timeshares listed which sellers want to give away.

Read the advice topics which are "sticky" notes. Stick around and ask many, many questions. If after six months, you still think that buying a timeshare is right for you, then you'll be ready to buy.
