I have just returned from two nights at the new HIlton Property on W 57th Street. I have been a member of the NY Hilton Club since 2005 and my husband and I decided to "trade up" to the new property on our visit to NYC in May. This was our first experience at the new place.

As others have said, the rooms, lobby and lounge look exactly like the artist's renderings. The style is quite chic and cool. We were in a "one bedroom plus" since that was all that was available at the time we booked. Apparently all the one bedrooms above the 14th floor are considered "plus." The windows are quite thick and the street sounds are almost entirely blocked. This is a good feature since 57th Street is a busy street. The flat screen TVs receive the high definition channels (although my husband had to redo the settings so we were actually seeing what the TVs were capable of showing). As with the Hilton Club, the bed was very comfortable and the linens deluxe. Our son was on the sofa bed and that was also very comfortable. The staff was eager to please and was very friendly.

The W57th lounge is bigger than the Hilton Club lounge but it is clearly not big enough! When the weather is nice, the outdoor area is open and is lovely. When the weather is bad, everyone has to be in the indoor area and it is too small. We were told that the place was only 85% booked and we had trouble finding a place to sit in the afternoon. For Sunday morning breakfast, there was no place to sit - and they didn't want us to take the dishes to our room. They offered take-out containers to leave with the food.

The only table in the room that can act like a dining table is the long rectangular table designed as the desk area. There is no coffee table. We had hoped to play cards with our kids in our room or in the lounge and there was no place to do this in either location. This was really disappointing!

We REALLY loved the old HIlton Club. We always go to NYC for one or two days at a time and the old Hilton Club was set up to accommodate that kind of vacationing. The new place is designed more like the HGVC model and you have to pay a premium to stay for shorter trips. I don't think that the resort itself is well suited for longer stays. As others have mentioned, there is no kitchen, only a small refrigerator. The lack of dining table -- or coffee table -- would make in-room eating difficult. For a couple of days in NY, it is fine to eat every meal out. For a whole week's vacation, this would get tiresome and expensive. Also... it's harder to have down time in your room that is furnished more like a hotel room than a home. I was thinking that we could use the lounge for hanging out and playing cards but the furniture there doesn't lend itself to that either.

The concierge in West 57th is located in the main lobby. I understand that they have contracted out this service so the concierge is not actually a Hilton employee. In the Hilton Club, the Hilton Club staff members act as the concierge staff and they are in the member lounge. In our four years of being Hilton Club members, these staff members have been the same people. It is so nice seeing a familiar face each time we've stayed at the club. It's also great to gather info and advice from them while having morning coffee or an afternoon snack. I've gotten great tips about getting tickets to shows or advice about what shows to see. I can't imagine using this main-lobby concierge in the same way.

I knew from TUG that there would be an in-and-out fee for my car. We were in NYC to help our daughter move to a new apartment. We drove in with the car loaded with stuff and used the West 57th valet service when we arrived. We told them that we would be taking the car out in the morning and were told about the fee. Turns out the fee is an entire day's garage fee of $48! It was going to cost us $144 to park for two nights. Instead,, when we returned from moving our daughter, we parked that evening at the old Hilton. When we checked out on Sunday, we just walked the couple of blocks and got our car. Arrangements had to be made with the manager at West 57th to get the second night charge taken off our our bill. (FYI: There is a garage on West 56th Street -- behind the resort -- where you can park your car yourself and avoid this ridiculous extra charge.)

Overall, we had a very nice stay but I was disappointed that it did not wow me enough. I felt that we were nickel- and-dimed at every opportunity (from the reservation process, the housekeeping fee, the valet fee) and it did not feel as homey and comfortable as the old HIlton Club. We plan to work with the Quality Assurance staff to un-do our purchase of the new place and return to the old plan that worked so well for us. I will report back to TUG about how that goes.

Thank for the great detailed trip report. This was very helpful.
I haven't been to either location in NYC.

What does the old Hilton Club have in terms of tables in the room or in the lounge?

What does the old Hilton Club room provide? refrigerator? wet bar/ separate sink area? microwave?

Isn't the old Hilton Club room more like a hotel room than a home? How is it different?

How hard is it to get in to either NYC properties?

Both the old Hilton Club and West 57th have rooms that are more like hotel rooms than like condo-like resort suites. In all the HIlton Club rooms, there is a small dining table and two chairs and a desk area. There is only the mini bar that we sometimes empty a bit to put in left overs. Since we only ever stay a couple of days, we usually have breakfast in the lounge and then eat out for the other meals. I believe you can ask for a small frig if you need one, but we have never bothered.

I don't think they are selling old Hilton Club memberships any more. They are only selling West 57th.

When we stayed this last weekend, they were only 85% full (according to a check-in person). In the lounge, we chatted with folks who owned at other HGVC resorts or at West 57th. We didn't meet anyone in the lounge who was considering a purchase. Perhaps they put potential owners up in the HIlton Club.

For stays or to purchase? If stays do you mean as an HGVC member with points, or as a member of the general public to book for paid stays?

For stays, as a HGVC member. My wife and I are planning on going to NY for 4-5 days in September sometime. I was wondering if I should try going through HGVC, or just try the Priceline route.

I booked my wife 3 nights with our points and was pleased with the value. Our room was 659.00 a night on the hilton website and we booked for around 1600 points. I figured with cleaning fee added we paid under 500.00 for the 3 days. for NY I find this to be a great deal.

As I mentioned, many of the folks we met in the lounge were HGVC owners from other resorts. Also, they were only 85% full for a weekend in the summer. I would think September might be even easier to get rooms using points. The last-minute cash option might work too. I'm not sure what those rates are like but they used to be pretty reasonable at the HIlton Club.

Another possibility.... We have stayed at the Chelsea Hampton Inn using our Hilton Honors points. There's also a Hampton Inn on 8th Avenue just above Times Square. You con book those rooms using HH points -- and cancel those reservations if you're able to book a room using the cash option closer to your travel time.

Thanks for the info :hi:

Makin' me SO HAPPY I kept my orignal Hilton Club NY

I have been a member of the old Hilton Club NY for about four years. It suits our needs very well. I could not see upgrading to the new building which is two or three blocks further from the things I go to NY to do. I love the staff at the old Hilton Club. The best thing is, now that 57th Street is open, they will stop putting potential buyers up in the old Hilton Club, so it should be less crowded than it has been the last year or so. I own 19,000 points at the old Hilton Club and absolutely love it.

As I mentioned in some other threads (and even some other message boards), there is no better deal right now than Studio Plus units at West 57th during weekdays (Monday-Friday check-out). It's only 375 pts/night! After Labor Day, the rates go up to 525 pts/night weekdays (5,250/full week). Still a decent deal. I think the upper units lose the good value because the points cost really jumps for Premier and Penthouse 1-Bedrooms (like more than three times as much for Penthouse!). Hilton is charging over $300/night for the Studio rooms (advance purchase no cancellations/changes/refunds is $299/night).

There is plenty of availability right now in September, but remember that the booking window for non-owners (other HGVC members) is 44 days in advance, so depending on what dates you want, you will have to wait to book. Log on to your HGVC account online, go to the Revolution booking engine, pick NEW YORK in the "SELECT DESTINATION" pull down menu, and click the "Monthly Grid View" tab. You will see all the upcoming availability, but you can only book within the 44 day window (and you must call in to book). Remember, when you call in, insist that you only pay the $49 ($39 Elite) online booking fee for changeable reservations, since the feature is not activated yet online they are allowing this. Do not let them charge you the extra $69 fee for changeable reservations!

As for HHonors stays, honestly the cash deals on hotels these days in NYC are too good to waste HHonors points on. Ordinarily, I would say it's a good value (for the last couple years when all NYC hotel rates were $300-400 per night minimum for a decent place, I used HHonors pts myself several times), but these days you can get decent hotels in Manhattan for less than $200/night, especially on weekends.

Also remember that the real value in HHonors stays are the VIP GLON reward stays, which have a minimum length of 6 nights. Anything less than that and you will have to pay 35K-40K pts/night, and this makes the value even worse for redemption.

I would save the HHonors points for another stay (Conrad Maldives! :D ), especially if you are only planning on a 4-5 night maximum stay. Remember, HHonors pts never expire if your account is in good standing (and active).

If I was staying a full week, this is how I would do it: stay four nights at West 57th (Monday-Thurs, no cleaning fee) and then three nights at another Manhattan hotel on a cheap weekend cash rate. If you only want to stay 4 or 5 nights, just go for the West 57th, check-in on a Monday, and save a bundle (even one weekend night thrown in there is not a bad value!).

Piper,
Thanks for your post, we also belong to the Hilton Club, we love it and when we previewed w57th I had a hard time getting those questions answered.
There were many differences in the two, I am perfectly happy with the Club and I would not really consider switching, because we love it being a part of the main hotel. If you don't want to leave the building, you don't have to!
Good luck with it!

Steve .... Were they up front with you about the difference between the Club and W57th? Did you already know about the housekeeping fees and the change in the reservation system? Our sales agent pitched the reduced maintenance fees --- but didn't talk about the housekeeping charge.

From the pitch I did not get all of the information, however, after reading everything and the small print, I knew they were going to be some big differences. They are neither good or bad, just different. I am sure that many people will like w57th better than the club, we prefer to go to NYC 4-5 weeks a year, it would be hard for me to justify that much more money considering we don't owe anything on the club.
