I'd like to share info about a trip my husband and I just returned from.
We planned a getaway (all on points), just the two of us to celebrate our 16th anniversary. My sister took our 3 kids for us. I love my sister!
I planned a few overnights in MA and ME but concluded with 3 nights at Wentworth. What a jewel of a resort it is! www.wentworth.com I had lived in New England in the 80's and early 90's and never heard of it. From what I learned, in the 70's and 80's the place was a mess - boarded up and falling a part. It was totally renovated in 2003 by the family who owns the franchise. They put 30 million into it. It looks nothing like a Marriott hotel. I don't feel that this place has gotten the TUG attention it deserves.
About 2 months in advance of our arrival, I called ahead and asked if an upgrade was possible (mentioning our anniv.) and they said that they would if it was available. Well, at check in they upgraded us to a marina suite. The marina suites are a short walk from the main building and overlook the beautiful marina. There is a private outdoor pool for the marina suite guests. When we walked in the door we were flabergasted! The unit was to die for! Livingroom with entertainment wall unit with a flat panel TV and a gas fireplace, kitchen/dining area, office, washer/dryer and powder room on the first floor. The second floor had a master br with a deck and a monsterous bathroom with big soaking tub, seperate shower and private toilet area AND a second br with it's own bathroom. We could have hosted a cocktail party for 50 and had room to spare. The view from our place looked like a postcard!
Wentworth had very little Marriott signage anywhere. The only dead giveaway was the painting of the Marriotts in the main lobby area. The hotel is a classic grand hotel such as the Mount Washington Hotel.
There are 3 dining choices: Lattitudes which is down at the marina, the Roosevelt Room (bar) with piano/guitar playing and the Wentworth Diningroom. We tried and enjoyed them all.
The Spa was lovely. My only slight complaint is that their "relaxation room" did not have truly comfortable furniture. Other than that, the treatments we had were wonderful. Steam room and outdoor jacuzzi were a plus.
Guests have privliges at the Wentworth Country Club for golf. That is less than a quater of a mile down the road. Although we had planned to play, I had very badly sprained my ankle 3 weeks before the trip. I have a big black boot to wear. No golf for us on this trip.
For those traveling from a distance, a few days in Boston coupled with a few days at Wentworth would be a great combination. Wentworth is in New Castle (Portsmouth) NH and only about an hour from Boston. Freeport, ME where there is LL Bean and many outlets is less than an hour away.
I know we'll go again. It was a wonderful, relaxing location.
If anyone has questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them.
