I've stared a health kick that has cut out white rice in favor of brown rice (I guess arsenic is good for you:ponder:) Anyway, I had a cheapo Oster rice cooker for years, but on my 3rd batch of brown rice stuck to the bottom, I decided to splurge and buy a Zojirushi 3 cup rice maker.

It is a cute little thing that sings while it works. :giggle:

I haven't made brown rice in it yet, but am discovering its setting for Steel Cut Oats which I eat every morning. I used to make them in my Hot Logic, but they never really fully cooked. The next thing I need to see is how to set the timer to have it cook the oats in the morning so they will be ready when I wake up.

LOL, you reminded me of when I got my first electric pressure cooker. It has a delay timer, so I was able to set it up to turn on and have oatmeal ready when I got up! That was handy, I must say.

So, do you set it for when you want the oats to be cooked (and you wake up), or when you want it to start the cooking process?

You set the time for it to turn on - keeping in mind that it will take some length of time to heat up enough to actually start cooking the oats. That’s what I always forgot to allow for!

It takes an hour to cook Steel Cut Oats, so it's not rocket science.

The pressure cooker takes 4 minutes at pressure, then a minimum 20 minutes to cool down before you release the pressure. When you add in the time it takes to come to pressure, it’s only a little less than an hour - but it’s automated, set it and forget it. The pot will keep it at 140° for several hours, if you don’t turn it off after you release the pressure. I just always forgot to allow for the time coming to pressure, so it wasn’t ready in time for a workday breakfast, when I was on a schedule!

Oh memories in 2 areas. We bought one of those fuzzy Zojis. I swear it must have been 2005, which I think was as soon as it came out. It came out, not surprisingly, during a burst of "FL" marketing behind various products.. The burst, as best as I could tell, originated in Japan and then spread a bit.
From the way-back machine, it reminds me of a "legend" I first met back in the '80s. Dick Morley, in addition to what wikipedia lists as accomplishments, also built and sold the first commercial "industrial controllers" based entirely on FL. Or, I have to joke, at least that is what he said they were. In both case, Dick's controllers, which my company actual bought and used, and the Zoji, I always asked "how the heck do I know this thing is using FL and how do the results differ?" I never got an answer in either case, but Dick was awesome and so was the rice.

I have an electric pressure cooker too, but it is too big (8 qt)

Couple of questions:
  • If you have a Stainless Steel pot and with all the heat directed at the bottom, does it stick?
  • How big is your Instant Pot?
  • How much do you make in a batch?

I'm low tech with my oat meal. I think it's a few minutes to boil water, add blueberries and oats, let sit until my next cup of coffee. Add a banana if there is any left. I started adding a teaspoon of cacao powder and a teaspoon of pomegranate powder recently. When I add these powders I add a half pack of stevia. Since I've never been in a hurry to eat oatmeal I can't really say how long it takes to cook. My bet is 15 minutes total.

We use a cheap rice cooker. Usually the rice pot goes into the refrigerator over night. The starch in the rice changes into a less starchy rice. We kind of like the long grain rice from Nepal we buy at Costco. I've never given a thought to the arsenic until just now. I guess we might have have both lead and arsenic in our rice from Costco. yum.

The IP I used for oatmeal is 6 quarts, and I didn’t have problems with the oatmeal sticking to the stainless steel pot, probably because the recipe I used said to spray it lightly with oil. For steel cut oats I used 2:1 water to oats. I didn’t make much at a time and didn’t make them very often, because DH doesn’t like the texture of steel cut, and it’s way easier to make 1-minute rolled oats in the microwave!

We make ~1/4 cup of uncooked Steel Cut Oats (combined) for our morning breakfast. That would get lost in our multi-cooker (Instant Pot). We both like the taste and texture of the Steel Cut Oats.

Zojirushi make amazing rice cookers, but they're slower than cheapo competitors. OTOH, they seem to be able to keep the rice fresh for like 24 hours after it's been cooked so that's pretty cool. I can also make a (for me) absurd amount of rice in my Top of the Line in the US Zojirushi at 10 "cups" (they measure the cups weird).
