I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. Looking to get a web cam that can be used with Skype to "visit" with daughter when we're in FL and she's in MICH.

I have NO clue on what is needed to do this. Any pointers/suggestions?

Laptop has "built in" web cam, but have never tried using it.

Be gentle techies - because I'm soooo computer illiterate, you'll need to spell it out in simple terms.

You don't need to spend any $$. If your laptop has a webcam, you're ready to go. Install Skype and it should just fire right up. It took us a little fiddling around, but we make it work!

I love it - not sure how we got the first kid through college without it. We talk to the second one ALL the time. We hold the laptop up to the dogs so he can 'visit' with them. Hilarious!

Here are a few links I found. Try Google if you don't learn enough from these. Looks like there's LOTS out there:

It's the next best thing to having them sit on your lap. :)

I just started to use this feature Skype and it's great. I finally have a new Mac and of course it comes with a camera. My old computer did not have one.

I have now spoken to my aunt/uncle and their son and his family in Italy No need for long distance calls, long distance calling cards. Not only do we talk to them but we get to see them.

I am just learning to use them so am not much help. My son set me up.

I have a camera on my new Lenovo Thinkpad but the microphone doesn't seem to work. Or I cannot figure out how to work it. :p The latter is probably the problem.

I have no idea where to find the way to un-mute it, or get it to work. I have looked everywhere and have done searches. Rick is always calling my laptop from the firehouse and cannot get the sound on my end. I hear him, but he cannot hear me. Frustrating.

John Chase may have to help with it.

In the lower right corner of the screen where all your programs load up - do you see the little megaphone?? Just click on that and make sure you do not have "MUTE" checked off - then you can turn it up or down. Also on my keyboard the is a place to raise and lower it on that. Check the lower right first.

I have a built-in webcam on my Toshiba laptop. We "visit" three or four times a week with our son, who lives in South Korea. It has made having him so far from home much more bearable.

I hear him, because that megaphone isn't muted, but he cannot hear me, and going through the process of adjusting the microphone settings doesn't seem to work for me.

Kjsgrammy, when you install the Skype application, it should 'find' the built-in webcam. You only need to use it for computer-to-computer calls. Computer-to-landline calls are cheap, but you don't need to schedule those. In order to talk/hear your loved ones, you may want/need to get a headset that plugs into the head/earphone jacks (probably side-by-side) on your laptop. They may be color-coded. We got a small, single headset for about $10. Sure makes hearing easier for both parties.

I'd buy a few $ of Skype credit and try it calling your home phone or a nearby relative or friend so that you get the feel for it, because it will seem a bit strange at first. There's a little delay that you will get used to.

With a little trial & error and practice you'll be Skyping all over the place.

Dori, we've got a son in SK too, and it's great to be able to see him and hear his voice. Between Skype and Facebook, we feel like he's not so far away.

We have a camera built in our laptop, but I also bought a little USB camera that sits on top of the monitor of my desktop. It has a built in microphone and works well.

OMG - thanks everyone for the posts!! You guys are great. Will have my daughter bring her laptop out and we'll try and set up both of our systems before we head off to our FL condo. Can't wait to make this happen - so excited!!!!!:whoopie:
