Florida's Disney World to get Fantasyland facelift

AP - ORLANDO, Fla. – Disney executives are planning the largest expansion in the history of Walt Disney World in central Florida.

The development will nearly double the size of Fantasyland and include a new, lavish ride based on the Little Mermaid. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo made the announcement Saturday.

Analysts predict it will re-ignite travel to Orlando, which has lagged in the global recession.

Disney also plans to update Star Tours, the Star Wars-themed ride in Disney's Hollywood Studios. It will debut in 2011. The Fantasyland overhaul will be complete by 2013. Disney declined to say how much it will spend on the projects.

I heard last time I was there that the new Little Mermaid ride would be where the old 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was. I always wondered why they let that lagoon sit for so long.

That 20,000 Leagues under the Sea ride was my favorite when WDW opened in 1971. Leaking windows (portholes) and water on the floor just added to the thrill of would the "sub" surface to let us off? Even the couple of college friends who had jobs on the crew loved it personality, like running off its track.

This all could make for a real interesting Little Mermaid ride, if a lagoon creature (or troll) resides in those waters.

It was one of the original E tickets! Do you remember the others?
