Washington DC - where to stay for someone with mobility issues?

We are trying to pull together a trip to DC for my father-in-law who, due to health constraints, will be in a wheelchair. I'm not sure how practical it is to stay in Timeshare and drive into the city. Some years ago when we took my dad, we stayed at Wyndham Alexandria and took the train in, but he was in great health. The Metro is not something FIL would be comfortable with. Does anyone have suggestions on planning this type of trip? It will probably be a group of about 10 in total. Would appreciate any input - thanks!
 
The Mayflower (Marriott, with timeshare rooms on the 7th floor) is in the city - in walking distance to the White House. DC is a drive to location for us, but after we’re checked in, I park my car for the duration of the stay (using spot hero or the like). We find DC highly walkable — and I imagine wheelchair accessible, but take the metro, or Uber/lyft when the weather is bad.
