Wyndham Old Town Alexandria or Wyndham Vacation Resorts at National Harbor? Both of these are available next July. My family has never toured the DC area and we would like to make this our family vacation next summer. Has anyone stayed at both of these? Any feedback/input would be appreciated. thanx, Dawn:whoopie:
It would be my husband ,me and 3 of our children traveling--ages 10, 14, and 19.

Old Town Alexendria would be my vote. Metro is 1 block away. National Harbor might be on a bus line vs the ferry over to Old Town Alexendra, walk multiple blocks to get to the same Metro Station.

Olde Town is nice, has a "movie" theater with lounging seats for watching your DVDs for free. Indoor pool (small) and nice fitness center free - connected to the Hilton next door. (parking is self park with the Hilton also). Hilton has expensive food and separate coffee shop, too.

Hope this helps.

We were at the Wyndham Old Town Alexandria two weeks ago, and we too were wondering which one to stay at next spring. I couldn't get much info from the staff about National Harbour, and I didn't want to do an 'owner's survey', so we drove over by ourselves to have a look at the new resort. From the outside, construction looks almost complete, and we could see them installing curtains in what I think will be a demo unit.
My first impression of National Harbour was that it seemed a bit isolated, and not within walking distance of anything outside of National Harbour itself. The ambiance is totally different from Alexandria - pristine vs quaint, I guess you could say. There didn't seem to be a lot going on there in Sept. We were the only ones out on the pier at noon on a Friday. I am sure there will be more activity by July. The Wyndham is located a couple of blocks up from the waterfront. The big draw for me is that the new resort will have three bedroom/three bathroom units.
From Alexandria, we took the metro into Washington to visit the museums and monuments during the day, but we ended up spending evenings wandering around Alexandria. This might not appeal to your younger crew, but I loved it. We bought daily Metro passes @ $7.50 ea. If there are five of you heading into Washington, it might be more cost effective to drive and find parking. (I don't know how challenging it is to find parking in Washington though). And then you also wouldn't have to haul your purchases on the Metro...
All that being said, I am still undecided myself.....:ponder:

I had my 3 nephews (15,13,8) there is December. They love the Metro. They will eat Subway unless you offer them steak - Subway is less than a block away (and does seem to close early). Dunkin Donuts is close to Old Town, too. Fortunately for me, they haven't learned to read menus posted outside of restrauants. :ignore:

Yes, I drove around National Harbor also. Isolated from DC tourist attractions, but very close to the Gaylord convention center. There are a couple of other hotels closer to the Gaylord, but the restrauants are down by the river making them closer to National Harbor.

I need to plan a road trip to National Harbor when it opens. :D

You really don't want to be an out of towner trying to drive in downtown Washington DC.

I was at Kennedy Center for a Royal Ballet performance a few years ago and the people sitting next to us(locals) were kicking themselves for driving, as they got lost!

I have friends who live in the MD and VA suburbs, who take the Metro into DC if they have to go.

This nicely sums up my impression too. Natl. Harbour is more like a "family resort desination"---as it builds out, it will be a nice little vacation destination unto itself, not really part of the DC area, but "you can get there from here". Alexandria is a more in-town sort of place.

It all depends on what you are looking for, but I'd personally prefer the "connectedness" of Alexandria.

I didn't realize National Harbor was not open yet--no wonder no reviews. Sounds like Alexandria would be the better location for all of the DC tourist areas--thanx again, Dawn
