I'm sure these poor tourists wished they had known that no insurance would cover them, if they breached their rental contract and took their car up:

I wouldn't attempt going beyond the visitor center with a regular car anyways: you need a true 4wd's low-gear just to get back down from the observatories...

Oops...

Dopes! What the?

I guess they decided to buy a timeshare week without getting a deed. At least they have the lifetime memory of walking back down Mauna Kea and learning what a parking brake is used for.

Ouch, at least the passengers got out.

In the past Alamo let you go there with their rentals, I don't know if they still do.

I wonder if their credit card auto insurance rider will kick in or not.

Driving to the Visitor Station, not the summit

It's usually still OK to drive to the Visitor Station at 9,200ft with a rental car, but not to the summit. No rental car contract (even Harper's 4X4s) allows you to take that road to the summit. The last few miles are steep and gravel. Plus, like right now, there can be snow and ice.

Since they clearly contravened their rental contract, I doubt very much that *any* insurance will pay...

If it was and in gear and the brake off ... thay may have been just enough extra friction to hold it...
The lost four other cars if you read the post... Wasn't the only one...
