We are going to Maui in May. Staying 3 nights at Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa before moving to Maui Ocean Club.

Our reservation confirmation for Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa shows a $30 per day resort fee. Does anyone know what we're getting for that $30?

Any tips for Maui are also appreciated.

Parking and Internet, I believe. I can't remember anymore because it is several years ago.

I remember looking for coffee in the room but couldn't find it so went to the bar to have a cup of coffee first by myself and a drink after that together. I found the coffee in the room the next morning.

It is a fee imposed by Hawaii for being allowed to stay at a resort on one of their islands. I.e. Tax.

I thought the hotel "resort fee" is in addition to the Hawaii taxes? Many of the Marriott hotels that are classified as "resorts" tack on a nightly resort fee, not just the Hawaii ones. It's not usually itemized to show what it's supposed to cover.

I have a timeshare up the coast from Wailea. I get charged a nightly resort fee ever time I stay there and it is a Hawaii state fee. This in addition to the taxes I pay on the ownership.

The difference is that the OP is asking about a Marriott hotel, not a Marriott timeshare. At the Marriott Hawaii properties the mandatory Hawaii transient taxes are itemized and charged for ALL accommodations but additional "Resort Fees" are only charged at the Marriott hotels. As was said, throughout Marriott's entire portfolio it's not unusual for any hotels that are classified as "resorts" to add an additional nightly fee, and they usually don't itemize what it covers.

If you want to know for sure, you should call them directly. Their website does not show a resort fee. Parking can be 25 to 35 bucks a day, internet can be 15 to 19 bucks a day, and there are always taxes and fees. Save yourself a surprise and call them...

Scroll down on the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa page, click on All Hotel Details-Accessibility and you'll see the upgraded Internet and Parking fees. You don't see the Resort Fee until you search dates/availability. For every date that I searched this comes up under all three tabs for Standard Rates, Room Packages and Rewards Offers: "Please Note – Daily resort fee of USD 30 in addition to room rate includes Internet, bottled water, intro scuba, discounts and more!"

I agree, call the resort directly if you want a full itemization. Just don't be surprised if you get a different answer than somebody else might get, because people have been questioning this "Resort Fee" add-on for years throughout the system and the info available is still as vague as it ever was.

A resort fee is really just a way to up profit. It has nothing to do with the transient tax that Hawaii imposes on ts occupants.

There was just an article in the Orlando Sentinel about resort fees in Florida. Apparently, Florida has the highest percent of hotels charging resort fees. It allows hotels to advertise a lower rate, then up their profit by 20-200%....

I would agree. As for the OP, if they are a Gold Elite MR member or higher, they would be entitled to free internet anyway. Not sure that the resort fee would cover a faster or better plan though.

I see resort fees as a ripoff. If they are mandatory, they should be included in the price of the room.

It happens industry-wide and every player says that they have to do it because otherwise their prices won't be competitive. I wonder if Resort Fees on top of base rates are a way for the property owners to keep some portion of the room rates out of the metric that determines the property managers' percentage fee? It doesn't seem likely that MI or any of the others would agree with that set-up but why else?

When we were going to stay there some years ago, I called the resort to get an idea of what was included in the resort fee. The big items in the fee were internet and parking, but also included were a welcome drink at a hotel bar and I think some food item, maybe from the pool restaurant.

Since we were Platinum MR members, I questioned the value of the fee. I was advised we would be given the option of paying it, given our MR elite status. We opted not to pay the fee, though the daily parking fee was almost as much as the resort fee itself!

If I had to guess, I would say this "option" is no longer available.

Oops, after finding a specific date, I was looking under the details for room details. I guess if it had been bolded in red I might have seen it...

We have not stayed at the Wailea Marriott for maybe 3 years, but when we stayed there the resort fee was optional if you are staying on MR points. That is not uncommon.

I would have guessed Las Vegas over Orlando

In the past year it seems almost every hotel in Vegas is charging a resort fee. Anywhere from $5.00 to $30.00 per night.

We stayed at the Wailea Marriott last year and loved it. The beach is fantastic, the property has several pools including a beautiful infinity pool, the on-site luau is not to be missed, and the resort is within walking distance of some great island shopping if you're into that.

The resort also has a number of dining options, both at the resort and at the outdoor shopping area I referred to above.

One tip: unless you plan to tour the island while you're there, I suggest you save the cost of a rental car and parking and just hang out at the resort as there is a ton of things to do right at the Marriott. We stayed a week and rented a car at the onsite Hertz desk just for the day. We did an outing to see Lahaina, Kaanapali, and Kapalua and then spent the rest of the week at the resort. No parking fees and just a one-day rental car cost, plus no hassle of having the return a car at the airport on getaway day.

There is shuttle service to and from the airport to the Wailea Marriott.

Enjoy!

Marriott Wailea

I just stayed at this hotel for 5 days last week. This is a very nice property with a great staff. I stayed here 6 years ago when there was not a resort fee, then we paid 18.00 parking fee and that included water and a ticket for two drinks. Today they charge you 20.00 to self park and 30.00 resort fee. They gave me a card for the benifits of the resort fee at check in. The resort fee is for local calls 10% off spa treatment , intro scuba diving lessons,2 bottles of water per day and a few other things that most people will not use. It's all about padding the profit. They didn't charge me for parking and I knew about the resort fee before I made my reservation. Rooms are nice size but furniture and decorations are simple and look kind of cheap. It's time for an update of the rooms. The Shops of Wailea is a 5 min walk for dining or shopping. The Luau is 110.00 per person
Most of the food was pretty good and all the watered down drinks you want. I would stay here again but if paying cash I might look at someplace else. They still give you a ticket for two drinks. There is still some construction going on but the major part is over. The new construction
around the pools look great, the pool bar still not open.

I have stayed here as a mystery shopper three times. The beach area is nice. The last time I walked around it (not stayed, just visited someone) was in May, and I am not sure why, but there was a black tarp up in front of the ocean area on a lot of the walking path next to the ocean. There was an annoying amount of restaurant construction near the pool closest to the Migrant restaurant the one with Sheldon Simeon from one of the Top Chef seasons.)

The last time I stayed, about a year to 15 months ago, the breakfast buffet on site at the hotel was marginal. Drinks were okay, nothing special. Some of the rooms were badly in need of new carpets. Perhaps this has been rectified as they were in the process of long term upgrades to rooms during that stay. If you are placed in the Tower, ask what you view is. Some "OV" rooms have a bit of ocean spyable if you stand on tip toes on the balcony, but really overlook the loading dock. LOUD early am. Some staff are not very knowledgeable about this and despite stating you do not want this room, they think it has a different view and you will end up back at the res. desk.

The Ruth's Chris in the shopping plaza next door is excellent; usually all are good, some better than others, and this one had really excellent service (as opposed to some good some bad at Honolulu, always exceptional at Waikiki or HORRIBLE in food and service at Waikaloa.) Go to Monkeypod up the road. Fun, casual, great food, weirdly different mai tais with lilikoi foam. :cheer:

Monkeypod is nice if you can get an outside table.

I found the weirdly different mai tai to be horrible. I had to send it back and have them make me a "regular" one.

We stayed at the Wailea Marriott hotel for one night a few years ago before our c/i to our TS at Maui Ocean Club as well. I cannot recall if we used points or not. I cannot fathom staying there and not having a car, or anywhere else on Maui and not having a car unless one doesn't mind having to pay big bucks for excursions that include transportation.

I was entirely unimpressed by this property though it was fine for a brief stay before we moved into our TS for a few weeks. Our room was ocean view and it was an okay ocean view, no real complaints. It looked over the main pool then out toward the ocean. It had no carpet at all but really dated old tile floors. Didn't mind having the tile, but the entire room was dated. Since that's been about 4 years ago, hopefully they have been updated.
