Visa car rental insurance...does it work?

We vacationed in Kauai last month and used our Visa card to rent the car from Thrifty Car Rentals believing that the Visa coverage car rental policy would suffice in case of accident or damage.

Short story is, that I backed the car into a tree and put a sizable dent in the left rear quarter panel. No injuries, no other cars involved, no accident report taken. The tree survived without any apparent damage. The bill comes to about a $240 repair.

I notified the rental agency when we returned the car and I notified BofA when we got home. I've submitted, I believe, all the paper work to both parties and waiting to see what happens.

Question: Has anyone had any experience with BofA/VISA? Does it really work or am I in for a lot of back-n-forth nonsense with endless requests for "additional data" until I give up and just send Thrifty $240 for the damage repair?

Read the fine print. I don't know about this particular company but each Visa has its own 'rules'. For some you have to go to your own car insurance first and then Visa will pay the rest; for others Visa pays the whole shot and yet for others you may be out of look depending on where you were (Caribbean is not usually covered by cc insurance) / what you were driving (forget high end sports cars) etc etc.

That is good news. I'm so glad it worked out for you.

I've always been an advocate of denying the CDW coverage in favor of the credit card coverage, but have never had to made a claim. It's good to know it went smoothly and w/o dickering to get something covered.

Thanks for letting us know.
