So we rented here last week through booking.com (Vacasa property) since it was Bike week where we live and we like to get out of town.

The location is great- right in Stowe off the recreation path and convenient to everything the town has to offer. Though it wasn't heated they had a really nice big outdoor pool as well as an indoor pool and a small old style hot tub and sauna. Grounds were mowed and had beautiful tall, old growth trees. Very nice. But no frills landscaping, except for around their welcome sign with lovely flowers.

The units are town homes. Ours was a loft with 2 bathrooms downstairs as well as the master bdrm and another bedroom (2 twins) downstairs, and a full or queen ? size bed and twin up in the loft.

The living room furniture was actually fairly comfortable (which is unusual in timeshares and rentals). Ginormous TV as well. Books and games provided.

The 3 mini splits for AC in the master bedroom, living area and loft worked well, but I thought it was weird there wasn't one in the second downstairs bedroom.

BTW- there are several different kinds of layouts at this resort. I made sure we got one with everything we needed on the first floor.

Here's the thing: This was a full ownership unit. (most there are full ownership, timeshares or quarter shares). In any case, the resort does not get involved in any rentals at all. What I find with renting from full owners, or airbnbs, or vrbo's that the units are never really kept in pristine condition. This particular unit was clean, but run down. The tiny kitchen's wallpaper was peeling. The kitchen cabinets and drawers were a mess. One big pot I used for pasta had to be scrubbed as it was dirty and had no lid so I had to make one out of aluminum foil. Another non stick pot was so scratched up it was unusable. Thankfully all the appliances worked ok. No counter space to work on. Only one kitchen garbage pail, though in Vermont they recycle. We got some bags from the front desk though they said they normally don't get involved with Vacasa properties.

In Vermont they also do that food scrap recycling for compost which I personally find gross and a small pail was provided for that, and the management at the resort said they had no mechanism for the food scraps anyway- only garbage and recycling, so they felt Vacasa would probably just throw it in the garbage as well and we could also if we wanted to.

In New Hampshire we don't do any of this. In fact in Vermont we always have to get used to the fact that we had to bring our own bags to the stores or pay 5 cents per bag. LOL!

There were a ton of light switches everywhere in the unit and it was still very dark. The bulbs were not bright. The light for the kitchen table was on a wall it was up against. Strange. There was a big window in the living room which helped a bit, but still dark. We go to hang up our clothes in the master bedroom closet and it is stuffed with blankets piled on the floor, lamps and fans. We skipped it and put everything in the drawers. I mean- how welcoming is that- here's your closet- just squeeze your clothes into it around all the junk piled in!

The master bed only had a sheet and a very thin kind of worn bedspread. The blankets in the closet were not king size- mostly full or twin. Skipped that also . Bathrooms were ok. (more modernized), though seemed to have a humidity problem even with the fans on the walls had some water dripping on them all the time.

The building itself seemed dirty- the outside- windows not cleaned. Soffits filthy. Needed a power wash. Most of the buildings seemed that way as well, including the reservation/recreation building. The decking coming in to the front door the paint peeling off. Weather strip was peeling off the door. You come into the front door into a kind of mud room/vestibule that at times smelled a bit like sewerage I think because there is a sewer/septic cover right next to the unit. BTW- the key to this unit was a single very small key you put into a keyhole kept in a lock box. That's it. Easy place to break into - not that I was worried as Stowe is a very safe place, but still.....You would think they would upgrade the lock system. Use key cards, etc. But then again last year at Sterling Ridge Log Cabin Resort they also used just regular keys. And in fact they left most of the log cabins open until someone checked in! I kid you not! LOL!

The back door you could open up to a storm door, but the problem was there was such a large gap below it we were afraid to keep the inside door open for fear a critter or bugs could slip in. So we had to keep the inside door closed. So much for letting some light in!

Anyway, I am not saying it's a bad place to stay because it was ok and the location was perfect. I do think $2400 for the rental was a lot for what it was though. And it was still off season. But I find with these full owner or house/ condo/cottage rentals we have done they just aren't up to the standards of a lot of timeshare rentals through a resort or a timeshare owner. Not always the case, but more so than not- at least for us that's the way it's been.

Next year we have a unit at Smuggs this same week through Vacasa- an OWLS unit-so hoping it's better. I got it for a much better rate and it's a 3 bedroom and very modern.

Does anyone else find these private type rentals are not as well kept? Maybe it's me and my OCD?

I've been pretty happy with Smuggs - plan to go back this weekend. RCI Last Call def beat your rental price. I've always gotten Smuggs via RCI for less than $800 IIRC so I can't personally see wanting to pay $2,400 to stay in Stowe.

Right. It’s really hard though to find a rental for exact dates we need ( for Bike week) and I have requirements: must be a resort with a pool, condo with king bed, air conditioning, full kitchen, 2 bathrooms, great or very good reviews. Rental prices have gone crazy. We used to be able to get what we want for like $1500 or so. Last year the log cabin at Sterling Ridge I think was around $2100. Now they want $2500. That is a one bedroom, one bathroom. We compromised on the one bathroom because the place had a nice private pond hubby could fish in without a license. And a jacuzzi tub which he likes.

When I was looking for something for next year the same unit we were in at Village Green for the exact same week was listed for $1400! I kid you not! I immediately texted Vacasa to ask why we were paying so much more this year and they essentially had no constructive answer for me. Then the listing suddenly disappeared!

The Owls unit for next year I somehow lucked out at $1896. It’s 3 bedrooms - not that we need them. Lots of space. But if you want that same unit now starting the week we check out next year it’s listed for over $3000!

One good thing is full owners at Smuggs have storage lockers so stuff isn’t shoved into closets and cabinets in the unit for storage.

I don’t belong to RCI. But of course we owned at Smuggs for 22 years so we are very familiar with the entire resort.

What’s IIRC?

This feels like exactly the reason to have a fixed week TS (if you can still get one) that is the week you want and has the amenities you want. I have to bet that MFs in that area are going to be under $2,000 for a bunch of options.

Yes I know that. I've been around the timeshare block for a very long time. LOL!

Our timeshare at Smuggs was a fixed week (30) with a floater attached in the same unit we picked out when we bought and we used the fixed week every single year at Smuggs except for one which we used for Hawaii. The floater weeks we used to trade all over the country until our son got older and then we also used the floaters at the resort for whatever week was assigned to us. That's when we stopped our membership to RCI. Smuggs was like our second home.

And when we retired and moved in 2020 to a vacation land we divested ourselves of Smuggs because the resort had a take back program which we took advantage of since they were going to be stopping the program in another year. We didn't feel we needed the Smuggs experience anymore.

We also still have a fixed week (31) that we acquired for free in the same unit every year at Innseason Pollard Brook in Lincoln, NH that we always use. It's less than an hour away from our house and we also get free day use of the facilities throughout the year.

We never converted our weeks to points or Wyndham or any of that.

Living here during bike week, though, gets old fast and so that is why we choose to get away that week now. We went on a tour of South Dakota that week in 2023 and last year we rented at Sterling Ridge Resort near Smuggs and, of course, this year in Stowe. I really have given up on flying anymore and we like that we can easily drive to Vermont in just a couple of hours. plus I belong to the VT251 club and I am trying to visit as many towns as we can (so far- 198).

I really don't want to be saddled with another timeshare. Plus I really would like to stay in other areas in Vermont to make it easier to visit more towns, and possibly Maine.

We plan to visit Maine more as well that week in the future, but again - not easy to get what we want and for a price we want. We like the comforts of home when we are away.

And at some point as we are getting older at least we won't be tied down to timeshares. We have flexibility to just say "ok- we have to suck it up and stay home on bike week". We will have to try to get rid of the Innseason one at some point as wel, l but right now it's easy peasy to use and I like that in off season we can take a ride and use their facilties. At least it's just 1 week and a desirable one in the White Mountains.

Anyhow- we can also do day trips to Vermont and Maine since the are so close. 1 1/2 hours to the border of either one from our home.

What is the VT251 club?
It's a club where the members' goal is to visit all 251 Vermont towns - including the unincorporated ones- plus the Gores in Vermont if desired (I think there are 14). They have a website.

Actually it's now 252 towns because recently Essex Junction seceded from the town of Essex. LOL!

I generally hate Airbnbs, Vacasa, etc b/c of all the stupid rules, notes, instructions, cleaning fees, etc. But sometimes they are a necessary evil depending on where you are going and the type of lodging you want.

I've gotten pretty good at reading reviews and scrutinizing listings. I've found that rentals where a single person / entity / business owns a bunch does a better job.

Your experience is my idea of hell and honestly would ruin my vacation. I don't need luxury but I like to stay in nice places. Otherwise it's not a vacation as far as I'm concerned.

I would be blasting that rental with a negative review.

Oh I wrote an honest review with photos! Lol!

We haven't either. We own a floating week in July/August ~ Red Season ~ so we get to choose whatever week we want in whatever type unit we want, (providing that unit is available), when we pay our maintenance fees. Why would we convert to an unknown???

BTW: Our timeshare is about an hour away from our house too.
