We had a thread on these a while back. Were my favorite product for cleaning toilets, but not made any more. I had a container of Vanish and noticed it was getting worn at the middle, at the line of the chemicals. Put it in a plastic bag on bathroom closet shelf, in case it wore through. Stuff was hard, so had to pound to get crystals loose to clean. Cardboard container kept disintegrating. Just too hard to get the crystals out so finally gave up. But what to do? Not a candidate for the landfill. Put the whole thing, nearly falling apart by now, in a bucket of water. Crystals dissolved. Poured the blue water into all the toilets for a grand finale clean.
Now I'll use only the liquid cleaners on the market. :bawl:

Had the same issue with the old crystal Draino, glommed up crystals and worn out cardboard and all.

The bubbling action of the crystal ones did make it seem like they were really working. The liquid toilet cleaners work though, and do cling to the sides and go under the rim better than the crystal ones. Max - in a black bottle - seems to do well for rust stains that come down from the tank.

If its not a candidate for the landfill its certainly not a candidate for the sewage treatment plant....

Modern landfills will have a liner of some sort to contain the leachate...

Sewage treatment plants are designed to treat biological waste..and depend on biological activity to treat the sewage...(bugs eat the poop) dumping a poison down the toilet could kill the bugs or just pass through the plant to the receiving waters

Many municipalities have a household chemical wast day every so often or provide a time and place to bring such things...ask about it

As far as cleaning your toilet I get on my knees with a rag and a mild abrasive and scrub away

There was a recent article in Smart Money, I think. 10 things your housekeeper won't tell you. It suggested dropping a couple of denture tablets in the John at night. It will swish clean with a light brushing in the morning. This was for 'toilet bathtub ring'.

I didn't try it. Who knows?

Sure it is. All cleaning chemicals end up there, including your mild abrasive, but I just couldn't see putting a glob in a disintegrated container in our garbage pail. I suppose water would have eventually dissolved it, but this way it was used as intended.
Our municipality does not have such waste days. I probably wouldn't have held onto this container for months even if it did.
