Mother Nature at work...
1st, a pandemic to make us stay at home.
2nd, tornados to take roofs off our homes.
3rd, killer wasps to take us out in now open houses.
And now, the sand from under our feet.

These pictures remind me of some of the words of the song I learned in church as a kid: "The foolish man built his house upon the sand . . . "

A few in S and VA, a single resort in NC, MD, PA, and UT, plus Jamaica and the Bahamas
had to make sure it wasn't at my timeshare. It is way too close to the ocean and new buildings have to be further back. It does have a a breathtaking view from balconies on all 3 floors.

Currently renting a house in Salvo, just 3 miles from where this happened. Wouldn’t have known about this if not for my daily visits to TUG !

People who own property on a shifting sand bar should expect this, and should not expect anyone else to bail them out.

Luckily this property had been condemned/unoccupied for 6 months before it collapsed. But beach erosion due to global warming is ongoing and won’t get better if we continue life as is

From 1993-2003 we vacationed with friends in the Outer Banks. Some years in addition to our summer weeks we also went the week of Christmas/New Years or Easter. None of us are likely to forget the year we stayed in a house called Campbell's Crest on a high spot on the sound side in Duck because we got to experience a nor'easter in early June. You could feel the house swaying in the heavy wind and see the pictures coming away from the walls at the bottom of their frames. The noise from the wind and the noises the house made had all of us feeling anxious. Afterwards the adults all said we better understood how sometimes settlers on the plains in the Midwest went mad from hearing the wind blow for weeks on end. After that experience every time we drove past the house in Rodanthe, the one that stuck out into the water if the tide was in and was in the movie "Nights in Rodanthe", it became a game for all of us to weigh in on whether or not we would be willing to live in that house if someone gave it to us.

At least 25 years ago friend of DH's brother who was a fellow teacher bought property and built a house in Swan Beach, north of Corolla. For a number of years there was no road to get there so only accessible by a 4 wheel drive vehicle. They built a good distance back from the beach. Think a good three rows of houses back from the dunes before the beach starts if you've stayed in the Outer Banks. When they weren't working on building and then finishing the house they were planting sea oats/grass to protect the dunes. The planting continued long after the house was done and was something they did pretty much every time they were there. The wife loves gardening so enjoyed the planting and has been active in a conservation program. They joke that over the years they've probably spent as much buying sea oats/grass to plant as they did on the materials to build their house. But it has all been to no avail. They are now close enough to the water that every storm or hurricane that comes they are holding their breath waiting to see if their house is still there or how much more beach is lost.
