Has anyone figured out why the wayport wireless at the vacation clubs are so slowwww. I've been at Desert Springs I and Timber Lodge. At the Timberlodge, the wireless AP was in my villa hidden in the laundry closet. The internet isnt good enough for any online gaming .

I've used it twice. At Manor Club it was fast all the time. At Grande Vista it was okay to slow and sometimes simply not available.

I bought a newer wifi card for my laptop which is 802.11B/G. I connected at "G" speeds (several times faster than the original "B"). Maybe they are set up for the faster cards?? I don't use wifi all that much on business or otherwise. I did bring my laptop to Ocean Pointe a couple weeks ago and had pretty good speeds most of the time. Like anything else, it slows down if there is heavy use. It was still a whole lot faster than dialup all the time and sometimes very fast by any standard. My card is a Linksys. Sometimes equipment talks to other equipment better if the brand is the same. I stuck with all Linksys (Cisco now) stuff because there is so much of it around.

We're off to Ocean Pointe in 2 weeks. Is there wifi in each villa?
ANything else we should know before we go?
Moochas gracias!

Anyone use a portable router to convert the wired into wireless? We were just talking about that and I was wondering how easy it was to do and if anyone had any recommendations as to portable routers.

I did this at the Surf Club and it worked great. I can't recall the brand but it is really small and comes with a soft case that everything fits in.

If you have a chance to post back exactly what to buy I'd appreciate it, since yours worked so well at the SC. Thanks

Any wireless router will work to do this.

I bought the D-Link DWL-G730AP because of it's size and reviews. Worked to perfection!

I'm at Grande Vista now and the wireless connection is quite fast. It may have to do with (1) what bldg you are in ... i.e. how far from a transmitter, and (2) how new your equipment is.

I was at Royal Palms and the connection was excellent. The next week I was at Beach Place and the connection was worse than dial-up. I called the wayport tech line and they gave me a song and dance about too many users downloading huge files.

It did seem like there was a fair amount of people at the resort, however, during the first half of the week(first week of Feb) you could have shot a cannon down A1A and not hit a thing. Things picked up a little toward the end of the week but it still seemed dead. The sales office closed down in December and the Sloppy Joes Restaurant also closed roughly about that time. The only place that was doing any business was the CVS Pharmacy that recently opened, much to the shagrin of all the small street vendors who were twiddling their collective thumbs. Even the elbo-room down the street, which usually has bodies hanging from the rafters, seemed strangely subdued.

i have a cradlepoint ctr-350. see www.cradlepoint.com. great size, i plug my cellular EVDO usb card (from Sprint) and all my laptops can access the internet through the ctr's wifi radio. i can also not use the Sprint card and plug a hotel's lan ethernet into the ctr and again share internet with all my laptop thru the ctr's wifi radio. quite small, the ctr is and the wifi range is quite good.

We're at Ocean Pointe right now (and have been for 2 weeks) and the wireless is working fine and has fast connections.

Yeah, I usually bring my older back up router (regular size not travel size) and it works great...especially if you are traveling with others who also have laptops.
