I have a timeshare with a contract to be sold by a company in New Hampshire. They said everything was ready and just waiting for the deed to be transferred. I waited for a period of time. Yesterday, I called and was told that a luxury tax has been attached to this sale of $2495 to be paid before the contract is complete. Is this legitimate? If so, must this be paid in advance or after the sale?

Need quick advice.........
Thank you.

Luxury Tax for timeshares?

You are being scammed, there is no such thing as luxury tax on timeshare sales. Do not continue to do business with this company!

Here is the history of the luxury tax, its been completely repealed since 2006!

In November 1991, The United States Congress enacted a luxury tax and was signed by the former President George H.W. Bush. The goal of the tax was to generate additional revenues to reduce the federal budget deficit. This tax was levied on material goods such as watches, expensive furs, boats, yachts, private jet planes, jewelry and expensive cars. Congress enacted a 10 percent luxury surcharge tax on boats over $100,000, cars over $30,000, aircraft over $250,000, and furs and jewelry over $10,000. The federal government estimated that it would raise $9 billion in excess revenues over the following five-year period. However, only two years after its imposition, in August 1993, the Congress decided to eliminate the “luxury tax” since it did not achieve its main objective. The tax revenues generated were disappointing and unsatisfactory for the Congress and it also negatively impacted the incomes of the sellers of the luxury items. Although the luxury automobiles tax was still active for the next 13 years.

absolutely a scam.

TOTAL SCAM!

If you have paid them anything, dispute it right now with your credit card company!

When you sell a timeshare, you should pay NOTHING - all fees should come out of the proceeds of the sale.

This company is going to steal your fees - there is no buyer!

BTW - if you call this company back, they are going to continue to lie to you. Don't interact with them - don't call them. If you have paid them anything, dispute it with your credit card, and send them a firm message canceling the transaction.

These people lie all day long for a living - if you contact them, they will just try to convince you that this is Legit...

*When you cancel, they may threaten to sue you - this is more BS. How can someone who is stealing from you, expose their scam in court?

It's just another way they lie to and intimidate people.

It's a scam, but if they continue have them to send you the documents stating there is a "tax". This is a new twist on trying to get money upfront.

Not new - been around for years… Especially with the Mexican timeshares.

Please post the name of the "company" so others may be warned.

Tell them that all taxes and whatnot are the responsibility of the buyer and you ain't paying a dime.

Out of curiosity, how much are they supposed to be giving you for the timeshare? how much of that is sitting in a 3rd party escrow account? Is what they are offering you too good to be true? if so, it probably is.

Tell them to pound sand and walk away.

They will just come up with another convincing lie about why it has to be paid upfront - it's better for her to just end contact immediately.

The only exception to this is if you offer some type of incentive to the buyer to take one off your hands (e.g. you pay for closing).

If you are every paying more than the $2-300 that I think the recommended closing companies here charge you are overpaying.

There is no convincing lie they can give. The reality is that you have to be willing to walk away from this in a second if they try that. Or you can have fun with them.... Inform them that you are recording the call in order to ensure the transaction is appropriate, make sure you have their company name and address... catch them in the act and report them to the FBI with the evidence.

You could ask them for their taxpayer ID # so you can send them a 1099.
But really, just walk away... "run for the hills."
You'll be out the $$ and still own a TS that now has a cloud on its title.

Thank you everyone who responded to my question regarding a luxury tax on timeshare selling.
The company is Vacation Advertising Solutions in Nashua, New Hampshire.

The company is Vacation Advertising Solutions in Nashua, New Hampshire.

The Key aspect to their name is Vacation Advertising Solutions, that is all they are EVER promising to do - ADVERTISE

If you post the area code and pre-fix it is probably a VOIP line that could exist in any computer anywhere in the worlld

The office ties back to a Regus.com property, which is a mail drop that also has offices for their customers to share when they need to appear legitimate, 1 step up from the UPS store Suite 101

After viewing their web site I agree with the others that this is a total scam. Do as Denise suggests and do everything you can to get back any money you paid them.

In case there were any doubts here is a link to a current prosecution

http://protectingyourpocket.blog.pa...3/world-mark-timeshare-resale-firm-shut-down/

The Defendent allegedly used fake names or, in some cases, names of licensed real estate agents to make claims sound legitimate. Defendant also sent consumers a purchase agreement signed by a fictitious buyer to make the sale seem imminent and requested up-front fees ranging from $1,600 to $4,100 for a title search or Florida taxes.

Timeshare owners who paid these fees were allegedly contacted again and required to pay additional fees for capital gains taxes or luxury taxes. After consumers paid all of the requested fees and taxes, no sale occurred and World Mark was unreachable
This one had the wrinkle of "borrowing" a known name to imply legitimacy

We were just contacted by them, asking to purchase our RCI weeks. They said they will give us $4599 for 3 weeks -2 bdrm or 6 weeks-$5,664 for a 1 bedroom.
They only ask for the one time charge which they said is a guest certificate fee and exchange fee of $900 or $1800 respectively.
They said it is a binding document and we are protected in a number of ways.
I have not read anything regarding rental of the property.
Is this a scam?

lol...yes this is a scam.

Run, run away...

No such thing even exists, plainly and simply stated. It's a scam --- period --- and no more credible than an imaginary "tortilla tax" on a Mexican RTU contract. :)

Unfortunately, these days there are unscrupulous companies who pretend to sell your timeshare. Then suddenly, a last minute item pops up that the seller must pay in order for the "sale" to be completed.

This is a well known scam. The company has not sold your timeshare. They are hoping you will send them $2495 for "nothing". If you do send the money, the company disappears, no longer answering any of your calls/emails. Then, you will not only be out that amount of money, the timeshare will still be in your name.
They change their name and move on find their next victim.

We have a section called Bargain Deals when owners may list their timeshare as a giveaway, or for a small sum of money.
Please feel free to list your timeshare there.

I am glad you found us before you sent them any money. If you did send them a deposit of any amount, dispute it now.

see my reply above to dollydolphin.
They are trying to get $2700 from you for nothing.
Do not answer any further calls from them.

I'm glad you found us before falling for their scam.
