Utah Transient Room Tax

I have 2 weeks at the Marriott Summit Watch that I want to rent for the 1st time. I discovered that Utah wants me to collect an 11% room tax. To do that I need to get a business license at $200 per year plus register with the State to remit the tax ($50). Does anybody do that? If so how cumbersome is it? What are the odds they will come after you if you don't remit the tax?
 
Curious how state got involved. Know that II, RCI and resorts have to collect applicable lodging tax on rentals.

However, a private rental is really not visible. Like are you going to pay Federal Income tax on this or just overlook since no 1099!

Of course, Utah could also require income tax like states do when professional athletics "work" within borders.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out!

Off hand, would say have to pay unless one shot exemption like for garage sales.

They will not send a SWAT team to NY but could easily lien property

I take it these are fixed weeks and not ones you booked using points? In my points-based experience, TOT is charged by the corporate TS entity either at time-of-booking (Worldmark) or at time of check-in (Wyndham). Owners are not, themselves, asked to collect and remit this tax to the state. Fixed weeks may be handled differently. Have you ever been charged a TOT for using your week(s)?

You may want to contact entities, such as VRBO or AirBnB, that provide "full-service" to see if they handle this for their owners (I'm guessing so; just keep in mind you will also get a 1099 for your federal taxes).

Is there a chance that the resort will collect the tax from the renter, and deposit it to the state? Surely they do that (collect the tax) on everyone else that stays in their lodging.

The problem is that the resort isn't involved. They aren't billing the customer, the OP is. The bill that the customer will get from the resort is $0 unless they have some incidentals charged to the villa.
