We usually fly Alaska and found on this recent trip to the Big Island we were offered upgrade to premium seats. We were dreading flying in economy and learned if you want to play seat lottery, the airline discounts the upgrade the closer to flight time you get. Initially, the premium seats were offered at $145/seat. the night before after I had checked in the price had dropped to $70 per seat.
I was able to get the exit row seats with an additional 8 inches of leg room both directions. The added cost for the 2 of us was a total of $300 round trip and considerring we were flying using a companion fare, tickets were very reasonable.
