Update on Kitchen Cabinet Painting

What a lovely change to your kitchen! I like the flowered valance, mostly because I like flowers, but also the “tile” pattern in the second valance doesn’t coordinate so well with the tile backsplash in the kitchen.

Yes, I like the flower valance for the kitchen as from the pictures it looks like it matches better, and couldn’t you do the second valance in the family room, as it will tie it in? It’s hard to tell with only the kitchen pictures.
And by the way, the kitchen looks beautiful!!!

Thank you: It is a great-room, so it would look better with all the same valences.

It will be beautiful no matter what you choose if your furniture coordinates, too, which I’m sure it does, as it looks like you have great taste! Great job!! You are almost finished! 👏👏👏

Thank you! Appreciate it!

Looks very nice. Rick built out cabinets himself, raised oak panels, and they are golden oak. He won't paint them, he said no to that. They are 20+ years out of style, so maybe they will come back in style. I do like the cabinets, but I would love a change.

What a difference! Your kitchen looks bigger and so much brighter! I also prefer the flowered valance as opposed to the tile like one.

Did the contractors do anything to the parts that were being painted to remove any grease, ensure the white paint would stick and the brown not show through, like stripping or sanding? Did they also paint the insides of the cupboards?

We have the popular '80's medium oak cabinets and I would love to have them painted a shade of white. I have a fairly large kitchen (14' X 14' U shaped work area) with a 12' X 14' eating area beside it) so there are lots of cupboards. We would also be replacing the counters and the flooring so we also need to figure out what order to do all that in. I would love to have it all arranged so I can pack up the kitchen and have the messy work done while we are in Florida then come home to a new kitchen and put everything back in the cupboards. The contractor we will likely use is a neighbour and a firefighter in the hall that DH retired from so we could trust him being in the house when we aren't there.

Yes, they took off the old finish and applied a primer and 2 coats of paint.

went from brown to white for our kitchen cabients too....its such an amazing difference!

Several years ago I had my oak cabinets painted light green. Still love them. The color is so soothing and welcoming. People are always surprised but realize they like them a lot!

Looks nice.

When we updated our kitchen a couple of years ago, the contractor knew what to do when. But all we did was replace countertops, cooktop and oven, so not as complicated as replacing everything.

Oh, ok, I was dreading that the cabinets would need sanding and make a big mess through out our open floorplan main floor. Our neighbour who is a contractor and will likely do our kitchen, just repainted another firefighter buddy's kitchen cabinets this winter and I am anxious to get home to see it. I dont know if they were changing the counters or not. If we are getting the cupboards painted, I want the old original laminate countertops replaced at the same time. If we are doing all that then we might as well get the vinyl floor replaced with something else, and since the kitchen is open to the front hall and family room, all those floors might as well match (they dont now) so the job just keeps getting bigger and more expensive.

They took all of the cabinet doors and drawers outside and completed all of the work on them out there. But inside the kitchen, they did have to sand the cabinet frames in place, and that created quite a bit of fine dust. However, they completely covered the floors and counters, all the way to the door, so most of the dust got wrapped up and taken out at the end of the project. They also used plastic sheeting to wall-in the kitchen, to keep dust and fumes contained as much as possible. Nothing got tracked into the rest of the house. But, some of the dust from the cabinet frames also fell into the cabinets, and now I am emptying the cabinets one at a time, cleaning the cabinets, and running the contents through the dishwasher. I'm only working on one dishwasher load at a time, which makes it less overwhelming. I don't really mind, because I'm just looking at it as spring cleaning, and I'm going to donate as much as possible.

I put up the new valance, and I like it - I still need to press it, but I wanted to do a test run first. (Please excuse the clutter - I'm still cleaning and sorting the cupboards.)
