I read this on the Loyalty Lobby blog. Looks like you can have your Marriott Rewards account suspended/terminated for non-payment of maintenance fees.

http://loyaltylobby.com/2013/09/24/...conditions-changes-regarding-account-closures

Here are the reasons for possible account closures:

(1) violated any of the Program Rules

(2) failed to pay any bills or accounts due to the Company or a participating hotel or any ownership related fees owed to Marriott Vacation Club

(3) acted in a manner inconsistent with applicable law, regulations or ordinances

(4) engaged in any misconduct or wrongdoing in connection with the Rewards Program, including without limitation, involving Point credit, Mile credit, Reward use, or Member benefits

(5) engaged in abusive, fraudulent, inappropriate, or hostile conduct in connection with the Rewards Program, the participating hotels or their guests or employees, or the Company or its employees.

Since many people trade their TS for hotel points IMHO it makes sense that marriott would and could be able to withhold hotel rewards if you do not pay your TS MFs.

Marriott Rewards Program

Just wondering if folks here think redeeming the large blocks of Marriott Rewards points.....500,000 or so....is worthwhile? My understanding is that the travel coupons that you get in an exchange of that size offers a superior value when compared to smaller exchanges. My general rule of thumb is that 20,000 Marriott Rewards points are going to get you into, approximately a room you would have spent about $200 for, when considering the room taxes. With my Marriott Vacation Club portfolio, I could quickly get over 500,000 in the hotel program and as a Premier Plus Vacation Club Member...on stays with less than 60 days notice I can make up for some of this redeemed time with a 30% deduction on Destination Club points required...or rent through channels like TUG to make up for it. For those of you familiar with the program, would you say that you get more than 10 cents per point, or $5,000 in value with what Marriott offers in an exchange like this? The Sales Reps at Marriott would lead you believe it is a better way to go. I am not sure because I don't know the details. I believe it is a combo of benefits including flight credits, two hotel stays and perhaps a discount on a rental car. 5 Day Stays and 7 Day Stays seem to be commonly part of these exchanges....at Marriott hotel properties. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

My thoughts are that exchanging any Marriott timeshare or DC point for MR points offers the lowest possible value as compared to other usage or rental options.

If I didn't care about value, then I would go for the travel packages which offer bundled Air, Hotel, and Car Rentals. Also would go for a free cruise. Those 500K points might get 5-7 nights for 2 persons worth about $1,500 - $2,000 cash.

20K MR points doesn't get too much anymore. Maybe one free night at a Fairfield, Courtyard, Springhill, or Residence Inn valued from $70-$130 USD.

Wow FT

I thought with all of your Marriott knowledge that you would have known this one! 500,000 Marriott Rewards is enough for two business/first class seats and 10 nights in a Marriott hotel or hotels almost anywhere in the world easily! Potential value of at least $15,000. Certainly not just $2000. Anyone in Tug land who has used rewards this way disagree? Chime in please.

Yes, if you go for the travel package as I discussed in my post.

My comments relating to the $2,000 were related to the relative value provided for a cruise from Marriott's cruise partner.
See link: http://mr.cruisesonly.com/

On the home page you can see what they offer as cash value for MR points in terms of booking a cruise.

The value of a MR point is also well documented over on the Marriott insiders board and mentioned here in other threads as well. See this link: http://www.rewards-insiders.marriott.com/thread/8547 I like the post from seattlite on Mar 21, 2013 1:18 AM best. See his spreadsheet.

The value is much less than the OP described so I offered my perspective and other supporting documentation.

BTW: In those $15,000 you indicated as value for the travel package, you forgot to subtract the associated MF of about $6,000. So that would be a lot less than your estimate.

I'm going to London/Paris, the French Riviera, Monaco, Milan, etc. to Rome on a month long trip next late summer. Got Business Class air to London on Air Canada and return from Rome on British Airways Business Class. Used the air+hotel pkg for business class air both ways.

I've just booked the JW Marriott for 2 nights in Cannes, France, Sept 26-28, 2014. I rarely use MR Pts for hotel stays unless part of a pkg, but when I saw the cheapest rate at this hotel was 999 Euros I decided to use 40,000 MR pts a night instead...worth about $500 US$ if you bought them from Marriott at $0.0125 per pt. Not sure what 999 Euros is worth but it's a lot more. So, sometimes, rarely, you can get a better deal using points than cash these days. I'm hoping for a Platinum upgrade once there as this was for a twin bed room. Must be something on that week in Cannes.

Congratulations pwrshift

That sounds like an awesome vacation!

You can find similar use cases in Asia as well. Comparable examples would be the JW Marriott or Ritz-Carlton in Beijing and Hong Kong. Hong Kong being more expensive than Beijing or Shanghai respectively. Their rates are similar to those you have quoted for Europe in late summer.

A travel package would make sense here as well since the value in the package comes from the bundled Air portion more than the hotel component.

I have not broken down the numbers but which of the the MRP exchange into 5-night/UA mileage vs. the 7-night/UA mileage a better deal?

Question about the point travel packages

In reading the reply above, Business Class Seats are mentioned. I assumed that the air tix would be coach. Is the default for a minimum of Business Class? That is not something we ever voluntarily pay the surcharge for, but it is a nice thing to have bundled into the package. I would value it at about half the differential that the airlines would ask for the bump up in class when evaluating its worth.

What you convert to is airline points. It is up to you how you want to use the points.
