United Flight Prices to Aruba from Newark

Anybody noticed that flight prices on United from Newark to Aruba are incredibly expensive for 2019? What used to cost $4-500 a ticket is now $700 to $1000 per ticket. What is going on?

We usually fly from JFK but a lot of times Newark is cheaper- but not in the last two years!!! I’m not sure why the Aruba prices have gone up so much. I think it has to do with a lot of other islands being damaged in the hurricane in 2017, making Aruba even more desirable.

Jet Blue is about $500, but JFK is very far and the only non stop flight to Aruba leaves at 7 am, which is ridiculous. Delta is also cheaper. It is just United that is gouging, it appears. I have elite status with United which gives me perks like pre-boarding and free baggage check so between that the and flight times and proximity to Newark, I don't want to fly other airlines. When I called United, they told me the planes for the flights I wanted were empty, so supply and demand don't appear to be the reason. Maybe it is the expectation that there will be demand. I am just baffled. I hope this is not a trend.

Put the dates you want into the Hopper app and Kayak and get notifications when they go down.

The thing that concerns me is flights from Newark to Aruba on United in January and February are also ridiculously high. It doesn't appear prices drop as the dates get closer.

Sometimes they do, but sometimes not. I try to book the day the flights come out if going Jet Blue. If I miss it usually United is my fall back but I guess that’s not happening for you! Also I go in the summer. Good luck! Hope you get lucky and the prices go down for you.

I, too, noticed United's flights (not just to Aruba) have gotten ridiculously expensive. Like you, we have status on United and prefer to fly with them for the perks. As my husband was approaching 2 million miles (and lifetime platinum) we HAD to fly United. Since he's reached that milestone, we tend to fly Jet Blue for shorter flights because they are so much cheaper and tend to be direct. I'm not sure what's going on with United.

United seems to be declining and they keep making it worse by making the economy seats unbearable, the service lackluster and the flights more expensive. My DH is within spitting distance of million miler so we keep flying UAL and earning elite status but beginning to wonder if it will be worth it in the end.

We usually fly UAL from EWR to SFO. Now SWA has a nonstop EWR to OAK which is much closer to home, with cheaper parking and less traffic. We can fly with the SWA companion pass so half the price of UAL and don't need to pay extra for econ plus because the legroom is fine. Now with SWA and AK/Virgin flying to HI with companion fares, not sure if we need UAL anymore. Can United survive as an international only airline?

If you can avoid the school holidays/breaks and have some date flexibility, there are some travel dates that are lower.

Here are the prices I saw today for nonstop flights from Newark.
Good Luck. I’m hoping to book a trip in the Fall

This stuff drives me crazy, and I'm a big cheapskate. I finally realized that after you pay for the flights you somewhat forget that it cost a little more. Go with convenience and comfort and stick with United. I would watch it for maybe another couple weeks and lock it in. I would also look for a hotel near JFK that will let you leave your car for that Jetblue flight and see if the math works. I fly mostly on United and Southwest, but fly Jetblue once and a while. The flight on Jetblue is good, but I've had a lot of issues with delays, flight maintenance, etc.

We go to Aruba at least once a year (just got back yesterday from our 2nd trip this year) and we fly JetBlue out of JFK just about every time (we live in NJ, 25 minutes from Newark Airport). When we flew down last Saturday, we took the 7am flight (we were with another couple) but when we fly with our kids and grand kids, we take the 11am flight. We find the fares consistently well below the United fares from Newark. Also, the comfort of the seats on JetBlue (even without paying for "more space") is always better than on United planes.

We just booked our flights for next July (their schedule was just extended last week) to Aruba out of JFK and the 11 am flight was $541 R/T vs. about $900 for the United flight out of Newark. When you are buying 4 or more tickets as we do, it is certainly worth the savings, even to pay for a car service to and from JFK. I have Silver Elite status on United due to my Marriott Platinum Elite status and it is not worth flying them, even for a free checked bag.

Yeah United Airfare can be crazy at times.
We live less than an hour away from Newark Airport but we’ve also flown out of JFK and PHL (both two hours away) a handful of times to avoid the crazy fares out of EWR.
