I have a two bedroom unit at the Broadway Sheraton Plantation, Myrtle Beach that I bought in 2003. I received 50,000 starpoints for the purchase.

#1 How many years do I have to use these points? Is it 6 years?

#2 For next year (April, 2009), I have been kicking around the idea of splitting up a stay in a one bedroom unit at the PGA in Port ST. Lucie - 5 day stay, then driving to Key West for 5 or 6 days (using accumulated starpoints) - then returning to PGA for the remaining days. Can this be done?

Normally, reservations of less than a week can only be made at 90 days out - so there may be nothing available by that time. However, I believe there are special exchange rules between those two resorts, so hopefully, an owner will chime in.

Best practice - make a reservation at 12 mos. out for your home resort (or at 8 mos. for another resort) for those dates, then at 3 mos. out, see if they have availability for the split week. If they do not - you still have your home resort as a back up.

As far as the Starpoints go, as long as you have an active SPG acct., I don't think they expire - get a Starwood AMEX and earn FREE Starpoints to keep it active.

Yes.

I'm pretty sure that StarPoints accumulated via SVO vacation ownership expire 6 years from the date they are deposited into your SPG account. The "Terms & Conditions" section on mystarcentral.com that discusses StarPoints specifically says that "[a]ny Starpoints earned through a vacation ownership program expire 6 years from the date of issue."

Moreover, the document giving me my StarPoints for my WKV developer purchase (titled "Starpoints Disclosure Statement") expressly states that "Starpoints awarded under either the Award of Starpoints or Starpoints Conversion Program must be used within six years after the date the Starpoints are deposited into your SPG Account."

Use 'em or lose 'em.

Does Starwood take StarPoints with an expiration date first when drawing from an owner's account?

I would hope this is the case, but have my doubts to Starwood looking out for us in this way.

When you look at your account balance, there is no way to tell what the expiration date is. I would hope they at least take the points out in a FIFO (first-in, first-out) fashion. I'd hate to lose the points from my original WKORV purchase almost 6 years ago!
