In the Central mid Atlantic we are about 2-3 weeks past prime but I am thinking about next year. Picture below is from a local garden two weeks ago.

Has anyone done any of the tulip festivals? Possibly thinking about the one in Holland, MI. We really don't need the parade and the food, just want some vast expanses. So thinking about going mid week, the week before.

North of Seattle, in Mount Vernon there is a huge tulip festival. It is going on right now.

Was probably looking for US somewhere East of the Mississippi for 3-4 day getaway. Amsterdam does look nice though.

I was just at Keukenhof on Monday. Beautiful displays and lots of visitors. If you are truly looking for “vast expanses”, the commercial growing fields will give a far better bang for your buck. Northern WA state or Canby OR come to mind.

We also went north in Holland to the commercial growing area and it looks much the same as those mentioned above. Keukenhof is more about artistic displays with fabulous color combinaions and textural diversity, not sheer expanses like you will see in commercial growing areas. Absolutely beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but we are in Holland for other reasons So this was a bonus.

Sherwood Gardens in the Guilford area of Baltimore alsways has nice tulips. Also Longwood Gardens in Philly or Delaware line. People are always telling me to go to Longwood in the spring. I think it is the DuPont estates.

No need to travel to the Netherlands to see Dutch tulips in bloom. The world's largest annual tulip festival is in Canada's capital, Ottawa. This year it will be held between May 12th and May 22nd. The main festival venue is at Commissioners Park on Dow's Lake (part of the beautiful Rideau Canal) in the heart of Ottawa, with over 300,000 tulips on display. The National Capital Commission actually plants and cares for over 1 million tulip bulbs throughout the national capital region. It is a spectacular display.

There is a story behind this. Every year since the end of WWII, the Dutch government has gifted tulips to the Canadian people in thanks for the role and sacrifices of the soldiers of the Canadian Army during the liberation of the Netherlands. It is also to thank Canada for temporarily making the maternity ward of the Ottawa Civic Hospital in 1943 "neutral territory" (not part of Canada) for the birth of HRH Princess Margriet, so she would retain her Dutch nationality.

When Holland surrendered to Nazi Germany, the Dutch royal family went into exile in the UK. As heir to the throne, HRH Princess Juliana (later HM Queen Juliana) left the UK for Canada, bringing her first two daughters with her. They spent the remainder of their exile in Ottawa where her third daughter, Princess Margriet, was born. There has been a very close relationship between Canada and the Netherlands ever since.

The NCC also maintains a blooming meter for keeping an eye on peak blooming throughout the national capital region.

We live near Holland, and try to avoid Tulip Time due to crowds. Coming in a week early would most likely work best as most years the bloom is a little early recently with warmer spring weather. Windmill Island, parks, and the tulip lanes will all be open, I'd recommend coming mid week.

Reserve lodging you can cancel and check the status at https://www.cityofholland.com/1022/Tulip-Tracker

Also, consider an RCI stay in Northern Michigan while your here. Pinestead Reef in Traverse City, Shanty Creek, and Boyne all have condos with hiking, biking etc. It will still be cool for watersports, but also quiet.

The Tulip Festival is held each year in Holland Michigan in May. I went to Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI and it was a big deal for us each year as school was ending we would head up to Holland...

Thanks. Sherwood was where I was at earlier in the month. We hit Longwood Gardens every 2-3 years always in the Spring but I am sure it is lovely year round.
