Vacation Village in the Berkshires
We just got back from three wonderful weeks in Cancun--two at the Royal Sands and one at the Royal Islander. While there, we decided to try some restaurants we hadn't been to before, and were very pleased with our choices.
1. La Habichuela Sunset--The owners of La Habichuela in town opened this restaurant in the Hotel Zone five months ago. It's on the lagoon side, 1/2 block north of La Destileria and across from the Police Station. The restaurant is beautiful, and the wonderful Mayan garden outside has the same high-back wrought-iron chairs as in the downtown restaurant. The menu has a number of items not found in the downtown location. We had a terrific meal there, including an asparagus salad with goat cheese and Parmesan shavings big enough to share, and huge, grilled shrimp with garlic butter sauce on the side. Those staying at the Royal Resorts get a free flaming Mayan coffee at the end of the meal.
2. Grill 14--This big, beautiful restaurant is on the lagoon side, across from the Ritz-Carlton. Five of us went, and we all enjoyed it very much. We shared several appetizers, including Shrimp Twice and sushi, which we'd all order again. (We also had duck tacos in lettuce, but didn't care for that.) For entrees, we had duck breast, shrimp brochette over risotto, and chicken stuffed with cheese and spinach. All were very good.
3. MB--Michelle Bernstein (James Beard award winner, co-host of "Melting Pot" on the Food Network, winner of "Iron Chef") opened this restaurant in the Aqua Hotel, across the street from the southern end of La Isla Shopping Center. Some of the menu items can get very pricy, but we had a memorable meal at the lower end of the scale. My husband's dish was the winner: grouper with clams and Brussels sprouts over asparagus puree (about $20). You can see the menu and prices in the Cancun Menus guide, which we found in the beauty salon at the Royal Caribbean.
4. The Beach House--in the Me Hotel by Melia, just north of La Isla, next to the Beach Palace. The contemporary sculptures in the hotel are worth taking a look at on your way to the restaurant, which is at the back of the hotel on the beach. They gave us free mojitos, along with several other little goodies "from the chef." We loved the Angus Arrachera (flank steak with caramelized onions--$17) and Chicken Molito Rojo (chicken breast filled with squash flowers and cheese--$14). Desserts were also very good.
