I am flying into MSP tomorrow morning and picking up a car and my son. Does anyone have any recommendations for an Octoberfest or two for Friday and Saturday- they can be two different ones, no further than 500 miles from Minneapolis? I think St Louis would be the furthest I would want to drive.

A trip to Schell's Brewery in New Ulm might still be worth your time. They have an authentic German-style beer garden and it's the oldest brewery in MN (second oldest family owned in the US).

Haven't been to Octoberfest at the Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter, so can't comment on that, but the restaurant has an old style German vibe and is in a nice setting in the country. You could also combine a visit there with a short drive further east to the St. Croix River and Stillwater, which is a pretty area, and a visit to an apple orchard like Aamodts for fresh pie or doughnuts. https://www.aamodtsapplefarm.com/

Surly Brewing has theirs this weekend too. It's a very successful brewery with a huge modern building in the city, so it will likely have a less traditional feeling but should have a young, hipper crowd.
